Wey Simpson Receives Award For Excellence
Wey Simpson, a broadcaster for 50 years, primarily in agriculture, received an Award for Excellence in Radio Broadcasting from the Ester Reed Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Other accolades Simpson has received include the Washington State University Alumni Award for Achievement and the National Farm Broadcaster of the Year award.
Daniel Getz, a 1994 graduate of Cheney High School, now a premed student at Northwest Nazarene College, in Nampa, Idaho, was named as a 1997 Academic All-American student. He’s a junior and has earned a 3.996 grade-point average.
Anna Beth Getz, a junior at Cheney High and a point guard for the Cheney Blackhawks, won an Honorable Mention in the All-American selection in USA Today for basketball.
They are the children of Gerald and Ronda Getz, Cheney.
Christina Wells, daughter of Thomas and Katherine Wells of Spokane, received her degree from the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind.
Nate Fewel, A Gonzaga Prep June graduate, took first place in the Spokane Action Chess Tournament. He earned a chess and academic scholarship to attend the University of Maryland. Other Spokane students placing in the tournament and their high schools are: Sheldon Lu, second, G-Prep; Chris Sheridan, third place, North Central; and Markus Wasserfall, North Central.
Sherry Hietala, a student at the University of Washington, has been admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., where she will continue to major in physics and mathematics. She is the daughter of Eric and Nancy Hietala of Spokane.
Marla Dunham, Spokane, earned a place on the Dean’s List at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.
May Whitney took first place in the short story category and first place in the play competition, in the statewide writing contest sponsored by General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Lora Storz-Carman placed second, and Carol Roberts, placed third in the short story division.
Winning poets were Delora Jewett, June Berry and Lora Storz-Carman.
All are members of the Poetry Scribes of Spokane.
Rachel Marie Hare, Spokane, earned a place on the Dean’s List for spring semester at the University of Montana in Missoula. Students must maintain a 3.5 grade-point average.
John Coley, deputy with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, was named the Outstanding Law Enforcement Individual for Prevention Efforts by the Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council.
Four area students received Mary M. Fraijo Scholarships from the Spokane Chapter of the American Society of Women Accountants.
The students, scholarship amounts, class standings and schools are:
Leonard Sweet, $1,000, senior, Gonzaga University; Sharon Greenslitt, $750, senior, Whitworth College; Jodi Hume, $750, junior, Eastern Washington University; and Lynette Hamilton, $500, junior, GU.
The University of Idaho College of Engineering honored David L. Hisel as Outstanding Senior for Computer Science; David Weber as Outstanding Senior for Civil Engineering; and Ronald O. Nelson as Outstanding Senior for Electrical Engineering.
Brenna Holcomb, a sophomore at Whitman College majoring in sociology and theater, received two drama awards this spring: the Cherry Production Award for outstanding services to the theater in a technical field and the Jean Morgan Stone Award as the most promising sophomore actress.
Holcomb is the daughter of Robert and Fleeta Holcomb of Colbert
