Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: For years I struggled with the tall round glass candles and how to get them lit as the wick burned down lower and lower in the jar.

One day it hit me. I put a match on the end of a clothespin, lit the match, turned the candle jar sideways, inserted the clothespin with attached match and lit the candle.

Now I can light my candles all the way down to the bottom of the jar, and my hand doesn’t get the back soot all over it. - Phetney Cleveland, Leverett, Mass.

Dear Heloise: Much better than the nutcracker for opening small bottles like fingernail polish, even up to larger ones like steak sauce, is a pair of slip-joint pliers.

My husband bought two for me (to protect his own!), one for kitchen drawer and one for my desk as a third-grade teacher before I retired.

This way the nutcracker stays with the picks instead of all over the house. - Mary Seslar, Marysville, Ohio
