Obituaries

Edward Foubert Jr. Veradale

Funeral Mass for Edward L. Foubert Jr., 79, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary Catholic Church. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Marquette, Mich., Mr. Foubert died Sunday.

He graduated from Gonzaga University in 1939 and from the University of Washington in 1947.

He taught at the University of Washington and Gonzaga University. He also worked for Hollister-Stier Laboratories. Mr. Foubert later became director of regulatory affairs department at Hollister-Stier for 30 years.

He married Norma LeMieux in 1985 in Spokane.

Mr. Foubert was a member of St. Pascal Catholic Church, Central Lions Club, Society of American Bacteriologists, Alpha Sigma at the University of Seattle, Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Washington, and Alpha Sigma at Gonzaga University.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, John and Edward Foubert, both of Spokane; and two sisters, Lelia Westhauer and Norva Edmonds, both of Spokane.

Roy Cosand Spokane

Visitation for Roy Cosand, 89, will be from noon to 5 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Service is set for 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Cosand, who was born in Grangeville, Idaho, died Monday.

He graduated from Grangeville High School in 1925 and moved to Spokane in 1926.

He served in the Army during World War II as a radar operator.

Mr. Cosand worked for 40 years for local dairies, including Inland Empire Dairy, Carnation Dairy, Benewah Creamery and the Commercial Creamery of Spokane. He retired in 1973.

Mr. Cosand was a member of the Corbin Community Center and Sinto Senior Center.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Margaret; and a brother, Bert Cosand of Nine Mile Falls.

Arthur Winterroth Spokane

Service for Arthur J. Winterroth, 74, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Winterroth, who was born in Hebron, N.D., died Sunday.

He worked as a mechanic and truck driver for John Deere until his retirement.

He was a 46-year Spokane resident and was a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 2.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Lucille; three sons, Gale Winterroth of Coulee City, Wash., and Kenneth and Danny Winterroth, both of Spokane; two daughters, Shirley Hathaway of Newman Lake and Sandi Schofield of Spokane; three brothers, Elvin Winterroth of Seattle, Ervin Winterroth of North Dakota and Dean Winterroth of Ohio; a sister, Alma Greenwood of Portland; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

George Gray Spokane

Memorial service for George A. Gray, 78, will be at 1 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Gray, who was born in Cleveland, died Monday.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Gray worked as a salesman for Albertsons and Nalley Foods until his retirement.

He was a 45-year Spokane resident and a member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Maxine; a son, Jim Gray of Spokane; a daughter, Joan Hendren of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Alice Foster of Redmond, Ore., and Ruby Pippett of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission.

Joyce Becker Spokane

Memorial service for Joyce E. Becker, 67, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Ms. Becker, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.

She graduated from the University of Idaho.

Ms. Becker taught school at Wilson School in Spokane and at Mount Rainier High School in Seattle.

She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and the Washington Education Association.

Survivors include a sister, Claire Sodorff of Sandpoint.

Matthew Neidhart Spokane

Memorial service for Matthew D. Neidhart, 37, will be at 6 p.m. today at Gretna Green Chapel. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements and cremation.

Mr. Neidhart, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Aug. 27 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Uniontown, Wash.

He worked for 11 years in the custodial department at Eastern Washington University.

He was a member of the Spokane Dart League.

Survivors include a son, Matthew Neidhart of Spokane; a daughter, Jennifer of New Mexico; his mother, Ulysse Neidhart of Medical Lake; a sister, Bridget Neidhart of Spokane; and a brother, Ronald Neidhart of Wenatchee.

David Anderson Colbert

Memorial service for David Eugene Anderson, 62, will be at 4 p.m. today at Colbert Chapel. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Anderson, who was born in Mount Pleasant, Mich., died Saturday.

He was a 21-year Spokane resident and worked as a lumberman.

Survivors include a son, David Anderson of Mount Pleasant; and a sister, Pat Carter, and a brother, Dale Anderson, both of Mount Pleasant.

Clark Towne Tekoa, Wash.

Service for Clark O. Towne, 76, is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairfield. Burial will follow at Rosewood Cemetery in Fairfield. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Tekoa, Mr. Towne died Sunday.

Mr. Towne graduated from Tekoa High School and served in the Air Force during World War II.

He farmed in the Tekoa area and retired in the mid-1980s.

His memberships included Zion Lutheran Church in Fairfield and the Triangle Grange in Fairfield.

Mr. Towne is survived by his wife of 44 years, Margaret; a son, Gene Towne of Tekoa; three daughters, Carol McNally of Cathlamet, Wash., Diane Johnson of Tekoa and Julie Spessard of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Paul Towne of King City, Ore.; two sisters, Elsie Green of Beaverton, Ore., and Nina Selvage of Seattle; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Lloyd Hose Sun City, Ariz.

Memorial service for Lloyd W. Hose, 78, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Harrington (Wash.) Congregational Church. Menke Funeral Home in Sun City is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Hose, who was born in Harrington, died Aug. 15.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He was a district manager for Farmers Insurance Co. until his retirement in 1980.

He moved to Sun City 10 months ago from Harrington.

Mr. Hose was a member of the Lions Club and was international zone chairman. He also was a member of the Spokane Brotherhood of Friends Lodge, the Harrington Golf and Country Club and the Palmbrook Country Club in Sun City.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve.

Carl Manz Greenacres

Private service for Carl W. Manz, 85, was Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mr. Manz, who was born in Warwick, N.D., died Sunday.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Manz worked for Spokane County as a mechanic.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Caroline; three daughters, Marjorie Pettet, Bonnie Hinman and Reneta Gay, all of Spokane; a sister, Christina Shellabarger of Curlew, Iowa; a brother, Johnny Manz of North Dakota; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Nina James Spokane

Service for Nina R. James, 77, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mrs. James, who was born in Potlatch, Idaho, died Friday.

She moved to Seattle, then to Anchorage, Alaska. She later lived in Hawaii for several years before moving back to Seattle. She moved to Spokane in 1963.

She worked at Savons and the Anita shop for more than eight years. She later worked at Deaconess Medical Center as a housekeeper for 10 years and retired in the mid-1980s.

Mrs. James was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4137 in Seattle.

Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Ostendorf of Chattaroy; three sisters, Elizabeth Kraus, Elaine Gambetti and Lynda Gambetty, all of Spokane; and two brothers, Stanley Gambetty and Richard Gambetty.

Barbara (Harris) Kitchen Murray, Idaho

Memorial service for Barbara Lee (Harris) Kitchen, 50, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Assembly of God in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Kitchen, who was born in Wallace, died Monday.

She graduated from Kellogg High School and attended North Idaho College.

Ms. Kitchen had worked in construction and was coordinator for the Silver Valley Natural Resources Trustees-Nine Mile and Canyon Creek Projects.

She had worked for the Idaho Social Services Department and had recently worked as a laborer for Morrison Knudsen Corp. at the Superfund cleanup site.

Ms. Kitchen had served as postmaster at the Murray post office and was a member of the Local 328 Labor Union, the Wallace Eagles and the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her fiance, John Knapp of Pinehurst, Idaho; three sons, Matt Miller of Coeur d’Alene, and Howard and Scott Cunningham, both of Spokane; a brother, Wayne Harrison of Clarkston, Wash.; a sister, Susan Sappington of Tacoma; and a stepbrother, Don Sappington of Nevada.

Carol (Conner) Crane Issaquah, Wash.

Graveside service for Carol A. (Conner) Crane, a former Spokane resident, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pines Cemetery. Beck’s Funeral Home in Edmonds, Wash., is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Crane, who was born in Spokane, died Monday. She was 58.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

Mrs. Crane worked for Burlington Northern as a railroad clerk until her early retirement in 1985.

She moved to Issaquah about seven years ago.

Survivors include a daughter, Tamra Reinertsen of Issaquah; a son, Steven Crane of Post Falls; her parents, Roy and Mary Conner of Spokane; three sisters, Patricia Bangs, Marilu Sanders and Margie Carter, all of Spokane; a brother, Robert Conner of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Kay Showalter Spokane

Mass for Kay Showalter, 96, was Wednesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Inurnment followed at Holy Cross Mausoleum.

Born in Colton, Wash., Mrs. Showalter died Sunday.

She moved to Spokane in 1921.

She worked at Culbertsons, Sears and the Navy Dining Room at Gonzaga during World War II. She later worked in the kitchen at Sacred Heart Medical Center for 33 years.

Mrs. Showalter was a member of St. Aloysius Parish, St. Jude’s Guild Altar Society, the Jesuit Mothers Auxiliary, the Mater Dei Auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters.

Her husband, Ben Showalter, died in 1954.

Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Joe Showalter, S.J., of Spokane and Don Showalter of Jordan, Minn.; seven grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren.

Betty Marinac Newport, Wash.

Memorial gathering for Betty Sue Marinac, 65, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at 319 S. Blackhawk in Oldtown, Idaho. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home of Newport is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Marinac, who was born in Lindsay, Okla., died Friday.

She moved to Newport in 1974 from Lincoln County.

Mrs. Marinac was a homemaker.

Her husband, Daniel Marinac, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Anderson of Oklahoma City and Velda Snyder of Newport; a son, Wayne Sanders of Newport; a brother, Lynn McDonald of Gadson, Ala.; a sister, Faye Saunders of Canadian, Okla.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Floyd Graham Jr. Spokane

Memorial service for Floyd S. Graham Jr., 64, will be at 7 p.m. Friday at University Kingdom Hall. Burial will follow at Scotts Valley Cemetery in Tum Tum, Wash. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Graham, who was born in New Jersey, died Sunday.

He served in the Army and later worked as a warehouseman for Caterpillar in Spokane.

Mr. Graham was a resident of the Spokane area for more than 50 years.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet; two sons, Floyd and David Graham, both of Spokane; a daughter, Tamera Tavian of Spokane; five stepchildren; a brother, Paul Graham of San Marino, Calif.; two sisters, Betty Newell of Boise and Marie Sexsmith of Tum Tum; and 12 grandchildren.

Bernice Noah Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Bernice Noah, 87, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Northside Church of Christ in Spokane. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Noah, who was born in Kentucky, died Aug. 27.

She moved to Spokane in the 1940s and sold encyclopedias.

Mrs. Noah returned to Kentucky in 1975 before moving to Florida in 1986, where she lived for 10 years before moving to Coeur d’Alene last year.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Her husband, Samuel, died in 1975.

Survivors include two sons, Sam Noah of New York City and Ron Noah of Coeur d’Alene; and three grandchildren.

Winston ‘Smitty’ Smith Spokane

Memorial service for Winston A. “Smitty” Smith, 56, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Born in Rome, Ga., Mr. Smith died Aug. 28.

He served in the Air Force and moved to Spokane in 1959.

Mr. Smith worked in the heating, electrical and air conditioning business for many years. He owned S&N Electric in Spokane, retiring in the early 1990s.

His memberships included the El Katif Shrine and Palomino Patrol and the Masonic Temple Oriental Blue Lodge.

Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Duane Smith of Honolulu; a daughter, Debra Smith Kopp of Spokane; his mother, Norma Smith, a brother, Vernon Smith, and a sister, Jean McDonald, all of Rome, Ga.; and two grandchildren; Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Geraldine (Wolfe) Edwards Spokane

No service will be held for Geraldine (Wolfe) Edwards, 72, at her request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Edwards, who was born in Tekoa, Wash., died Friday.

In 1942 she graduated from North Central High School and later from Eastern Washington University.

She was a teacher for School District 81 for 24 years, teaching first grade at Linwood, Regal, Field, Ridgeview and Browne Elementary schools. She retired in 1982.

She was a member of the Washington and National Education associations and the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include a son, Ryan Wolfe Edwards of Spokane; a daughter, Emelie Edwards Pospisil of Spokane; and three grandchildren.
