Britain To Go Sports-Free For A Day As Way Of Honoring Princess Diana

Associated Press

Saturday will be a sports-free day in Britain while the nation pays respect to Princess Diana.

There will be no pro soccer, the big cricket final has been postponed for a day and all horse racing has been canceled.

The Scotland-Belarus World Cup qualifying game became the latest event to join the sidelines in tribute to Saturday’s funeral in London. On Thursday, soccer’s international ruling body agreed the game could be put off until Sunday.

In New York, British tennis star Greg Rusedski will wear his black ribbon in the U.S. Open semifinal. And, in France, Olympic champion rowers Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent will compete, although their thoughts will be with Diana.

Rusedski, Redgrave and Pinsent are competing abroad and can’t expect to reschedule their events.
