Annual Bachelor Auction Will Benefit Easter Seal Society

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

Spokane bachelors, ages 23 to 74, will take center stage Friday for “An Evening of Elegance,” the seventh annual Easter Seals Bachelor Auction.

The fund-raising gala at the downtown DoubleTree Hotel benefits the Easter Seal Society of Washington, which provides programs and services to help people with disabilities.

Festivities begin at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, followed by the live auction at 7:30. Emcees Ken Hopkins and Dave Sposito (the KZZU Breakfast Boys), will introduce more than 40 of the Inland Northwest’s most eligible bachelors, each with a special date package to be awarded to the highest bidder. Some dates up for bid include dancing, picnics, weekend getaways, pampering at Spa Paradiso, candlelight dinners or fun-filled nights on the town.

The evening will also feature guest speaker Janine Richards, a multiple sclerosis patient, who will share how Easter Seals has improved her ability to communicate via computer by providing state-of-the-art technology.

Tickets to the auction are $12 and $15, available by calling G&B Select-A-Seat at 325-SEAT or (800) 325-SEAT. For information on the Easter Seal Society, call 326-8292.

Habitat fund-raiser

Take a scenic stroll down the Centennial Trail while raising money for Habitat for Humanity Spokane. The seventh annual “Hoof it for Humanity” walkathon is Sept. 20. Proceeds benefit the non-profit organization, which builds low-incoming housing in the community.

Organizers of the 10K walkathon hope to raise $40,000 this year, enough to build one house.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education, 2917 W. Fort George Wright Drive. The walk begins at 10 a.m., and is followed by lunch and entertainment by The Red Hot Mamas.

Walkers are encouraged to collect pledges prior to the event. Pledge forms are available at the Habitat for Humanity office, 732 N. Napa, or by calling 534-2552.

Community events

If you’re interested in the art of storytelling, you are invited to join the Spokane Storytelling League. The league’s first meeting of the season is Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Corbin Community Center, 827 W. Cleveland. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month through June.

Spokane Storytelling League trains storytellers for volunteer service in the community. Each meeting highlights a collection of books that focus on a given theme. The Spokane group is a member of the National Story League, founded in 1903 and considered to be the oldest storytelling club in the country. For more information, call Daisy Ramer at 466-1584.
