Climber Killed In Mt. Hood Fall
A Hood River climber fell about 1,000 feet to his death Saturday while ascending the northeast side of Mount Hood.
Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler said the victim’s name was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
Wampler said the victim was climbing with a person from California on the Cooper Spur route and fell to the top of Eliott Glacier at about the 10,000-foot level of the 11,240-foot peak.
He said the accident was at about 7:30 a.m. The companion called for help on a cellular phone.
The victim’s body was located by a Hood River County plane and removed to Cloud Cap by a helicopter from the 939th Rescue Wing of the Air Force Reserve.
