Jarrett Achieves First Victory In 20 Attempts At Richmond
Dale Jarrett finally caught Jeff Burton with 40 laps to go and held on to win the Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400 on Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Va.
Jarrett, who started 23rd, became the lowest starter to win the event since the track was reconfigured to its three-quarter mile layout in 1988. It was his fifth victory of the season and his first in 20 career races at Richmond.
Dale Earnhardt showed no signs of the fuzziness that plagued him six days earlier in the Southern 500, but his 15th-place finish extended his winless streak to a career-high 51 races.
Winston Cup points leader Jeff Gordon finished third, followed by Geoff Bodine and Rusty Wallace. Spokane’s Chad Little finished 40th.
Alex Zanardi was knocked off the pole position at today’s Texaco-Havoline 300-kilometer race in Monterey, Calif., by Bryan Herta.
Jean Alesi, the Benetton-Renault driver, in the midst of a disappointing season, got a spark at one of his favorite circuits as he won his second career pole position for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Italy.
