Water Troubles Close Statue Of Liberty

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island were closed to the public Sunday because of disrupted water and sewer service to the island.

Incoming water service from Jersey City, N.J., was temporarily shut down while new meters were being installed, National Park Service spokesman Manny Strumpf said.

At the same time, outgoing sewer service was disrupted by a blocked pipe. The two problems were not related, Strumpf said.

The island, in New York Harbor, is expected to reopen to visitors today, Strumpf said.
