Market Rumors Help Dollar
The dollar rose against most key currencies Monday, helped by market rumors that new German employment data for August would show further weakness and help keep Germany’s interest rates low.
Further helping the dollar was a modest rally in U.S. financial markets, a top Japanese monetary official’s endorsement of Japan’s low interest rates and a drop in the British pound on data that diminished prospects for higher interest rates in Britain.
But dealings were thin and traders were reluctant to draw any long-term conclusions.
