Colville Looks Sharp In Openers

Colville’s girls found the new league to their liking when the first Great Northern athletic contests occurred Thursday.

Colville’s volleyball and soccer teams both defeated Deer Park during the league’s maiden voyage.

The eight-team Great Northern, which plays in the state’s new 2A classification, includes five former Northeast A League teams and three ex-Frontier League (AA) teams. Colville comes from the Frontier, DP from the NEA.

Volleyball

Melissa Wollan served the match’s final five points and finished with nine kills, four aces and six digs in Colville’s 15-9, 15-6, 15-10 win over DP.

Raejean Hedrick also had nine kills, and Lindsey Braff added six digs for the Indians. Amanda Oswalt of the Stags totaled 14 digs.

Nikki Petticrew’s 11 kills and 25 digs guided Lakeside to a 15-10, 15-13, 15-10 win at Medical Lake.

Amber Sandman added 31 assists for the Eagles, who jumped to early leads in each game, including 8-3 in the opener. Jessica Muelken had six kills and three digs, and Kristina Blayne 25 assists and five kills for the Cardinals.

Chewelah defeated visiting Riverside 15-13, 15-1, 15-8. No details were reported.

Girls soccer

Jamie Rizzuto and Tracy Koesel had one goal and two assists apiece as Riverside topped visiting Medical Lake 5-0.

Larissa Miller added a pair of first-half goals for Riverside, which in recent years played on the same team with Deer Park players.

DP’s first foray without Riverside had a different outcome, as Kerri Brown’s goal and assist lifted visiting Colville to a 2-1 win.

The Stags’ Lisa Pansie tied the match at 1 midway through the second half, but Brown’s winner came 2 minutes later.

Chewelah’s match at Lakeside was not reported.
