Canadiens Sign Captain

Compiled From Wire Services

Vincent Damphousse reported to training camp for the Montreal Canadiens after signing a one-year contract that made him the highest-paid player in team history. The team captain will earn $3.275 million, passing the $3 million earned by former captain Pierre Turgeon before he was traded to St. Louis last October.

It gives Damphousse, 29, a chance to atone for a sub-par 1996-97 season, in which he led the Canadiens in scoring despite a 13-point drop from the previous season. He recorded 27 goals and 54 assists last season.

Camille Henry, a star center for the New York Rangers in the 1950s and 1960s, has died of diabetes in a Quebec City hospital at 64.

Small for a center, he broke into the NHL in 1953 with the Rangers and had 279 goals and 249 assists in 727 NHL games with New York, Chicago and St. Louis before he retired following the 1969-70 season, after which he fell into poverty until receiving $85,000 in the NHL pension settlement last year.
