Valleyfest Coordinator On Call - A Lot

From Staff Reports

Peggy Doering didn’t think twice before listing her home number as the telephone contact for Valleyfest.

As Valleyfest coordinator, she filled out a form for the US West Yellow Pages months ago.

“I feel like I should be an advertisement for US West,” she said, laughing.

Since the new directory was released a few weeks ago, Doering has been getting between 40 and 60 phone calls a day.

Most callers just want to know the time and date of Valleyfest, the annual community festival in the Spokane Valley.

The flood of phone calls prompted Doering to add voice messaging. She also told her children not to answer the phone.

“It’s been fun,” said Doering. “They don’t even answer the phone. They just hand the phone to me.”

For the record, Valleyfest will take place on Sept. 20 at Terrace View Park. A pancake breakfast begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 11 a.m. at the park. The Valleyfest parade begins at Shop-Ko at 9 a.m. The festival also features a 4 p.m. concert by the Spokane Symphony.

Doering has teamed up with organizers of the “NFL Punt, Pass and Kick” contest for a phone line dedicated to Valleyfest updates. For pre-recorded information on Valleyfest, call 456-5786.

SCOPE University meeting

SCOPE University will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the library of University High School, 10212 E. Ninth. Volunteers are needed for the anti-graffiti program, citizen patrol and other programs. For more information, call 458-2582 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

Fall 4-H roundup

Spokane County 4-H is hosting an old-fashioned pie social Tuesday evening for all 4-H members, leaders, parents and anyone else interested in the youth organization. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Spokane County Ag Center, 222 N. Havana. Those attending are asked to bring a pie to share.
