Washington St. Runners Unmatched At UI Invite
Washington State dominated the men’s and women’s fields Friday at the Idaho Cross Country Invitational as both teams captured six of the top seven places in the event run at Moscow.
All of Washington State’s 10 finishers in the men’s division placed among the first 12 overall, as the Cougars were credited with dual-meet victories against Idaho, Portland State and Gonzaga.
WSU’s women also scored three dual-meet wins while taking 11 of the first 19 spots.
In the men’s field, Idaho defeated Portland State and Gonzaga; and Portland State defeated Gonzaga. Among non-Division I teams, Lewis-Clark State College defeated Whitworth.
In the women’s field, Idaho defeated Portland State and Gonzaga; and Gonzaga defeated an incomplete Portland State team. Among the non-Division I teams, Whitworth defeated LCSC. Notably, Whitworth’s Annie Scott finished seventh, defeating all Division I runners except six from Washington State.
Washington State’s Bernard Lagat won the men’s division with a time of 20 minutes, 8 seconds for the 4-mile course.
WSU’s Kristin Ritzenthaler won the 2.5-mile women’s race in 14:55.7.
Volleyball
Sixth-ranked Washington State (9-0) committed five hitting errors in three games en route to a 15-2, 15-7, 15-0 win over Providence (6-4) at the University of Rhode Island Subway Classic.
The Cougars’ hitting percentage was .556 in the first game, .340 in the second and .421 in third; and WSU hitters were errorless in the first and third games. In contrast, Providence had more errors than kills in two games, hitting -.031, .143 and -.174.
Gonzaga (5-4) rallied from two games behind to defeat British Columbia 11-15, 14-16, 15-8, 15-12, 18-16 at the Oregon Nike Invitational in Eugene, Ore. It was B.C.’s opener.
Nicole Lamoure had 42 assists and 10 digs for the Bulldogs. Diane Pascua (17 kills) and Theresa Spink (14 kills) were the primary hitters.
At the Boise State Invitational, Kansas State (5-1) defeated Eastern Washington (5-2) 15-6, 16-14, 15-10.
Kim Exner had 14 kills, Lynn Robison 12 kills and Kim Maxwell 31 assists for the Eagles.
College men’s soccer
Mead High graduate Rich Cullen made one save to help his Air Force team hand Gonzaga University its first loss of the season, 1-0 in a first-round match at the Oregon State Tournament in Corvallis, Ore.
Air Force’s Ryan Sagastume scored in the 59th minute and the Falcons (3-0-0) advanced to play Oregon State Sunday.
Gonzaga (4-1-0) plays UC Irvine (1-0-2) on Sunday.
High school girls soccer
Lisa Hanson and Kristen Hawley both scored in the final 5 minutes to lift Shadle Park to a 2-0 non-league win at North Central.
NC goalie Jen Webber recorded 13 saves.
Junior hockey
Tyler Keller scored two goals and Dan Chambers stopped 33 shots as the Spokane Braves tied Grand Forks 3-3 in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League exhibition at Grand Forks, British Columbia.
The teams play again at 7:30 tonight at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
