Obituaries

Conrad Proctor Newport, Wash.

Service for Conrad Ellery Proctor, 80, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Monastery of St. Clare in Spokane. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Proctor, who was born in Proctor, Mont., died Friday.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Proctor married Margery Shaw in 1951.

He worked in the air conditioning and heating field as an engineer and had lived in the Newport area since 1970.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Roy Proctor of Cashmere, Wash., Ellery Proctor of Seattle, John Proctor of Newport, Peter Proctor of Cleveland and Anthony Proctor of Spokane; three daughters, Sister Patricia Proctor of Spokane, Barbara George of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Eulalia Rath of Minneapolis; two brothers, David Proctor of Elk and James Proctor of Campbell River, B.C.; two sisters, Lois Revlock of Philadelphia and Margaret Duran of Sierra Madre, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren.

George Welker Spokane

Visitation for George A. Welker, 91, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Welker, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday.

He worked as a journeyman plumber. He began working as an apprentice at his uncle’s plumbing shop at the age of 18.

He worked on construction projects throughout eastern Washington and was an estimator for Standard Plumbing and Heating and for Spokane Plumbing for many years.

Mr. Welker was a 50-year member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 44, where he served on the executive board. He was also on the Spokane County building code committee.

His wife, Lillian Johnson, died in 1974.

He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Welker, and a son, Dave Welker, both of Spokane; and two sisters, Della McKinney and Fern Harbaugh, both of Spokane.

Janet Martson Moscow, Idaho

Service for Janet B. Martson, 65, will be at 9 a.m. today at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.

Ms. Martson, who was born in Moscow, died Friday from complications related to multiple sclerosis.

She grew up on a farm near Pullman and graduated from Pullman High School.

Ms. Martson attended Kinman Business University in Spokane for one year before returning to Pullman, where she worked in the Animal Science Department at Washington State University.

She later worked as a secretary for the dean of the Veterinary Science School. She retired in 1969 due to medical reasons.

She moved to Latah Health Services in Moscow in 1976.

Survivors include a daughter, Patty Collins of Troy, Idaho; a son, Bill Martson of Pullman; her mother, Eveline Brown of Pullman; two brothers, Dick Brown of Spokane and Jim Brown of Pullman; a sister, Joan Blankenship of Pullman; and five grandchildren.

Martha (Leetsch) Wilson Cheney

Graveside service for Martha H. (Leetsch) Wilson, 90, will be at 3 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral home-South is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Wilson, who was born on a ranch near Springdale, Wash., died Friday.

She was valedictorian of her Springdale High School graduating class and also graduated from Eastern Washington University.

She taught school for one year in Colville.

Mrs. Wilson married Victor “Pete” Wilson in 1939.

She had been a Cheney resident since 1939 and was a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1981.

Survivors include a son, John Wilson of Boston; a daughter, Nancy Cashon of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Clarence ‘Casey’ Overmyer Hunters, Wash.

Visitation for Clarence E. “Casey” Overmyer, 80, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Cedonia (Wash.) Community Church. Service will follow at 1 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Cedonia Cemetery.

Mr. Overmyer, who was born in Hunters, died Friday.

He graduated from Hunters High School and later served in the Navy during World War II.

He picked apples for the Hunters Land Co. and later went to Seward, Alaska, to help build barracks.

Mr. Overmyer moved back to Hunters and was a farmer. He also worked in plumbing, electrical wiring and carpentry and hauled grain.

He is survived by a sister, Margaret Warren of Hunters; and two brothers, Dave Overmyer of Harrington, Wash., and Roy Overmyer of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Hunters Senior Citizens.

Charlie ‘Dick’ Parish Benge, Wash.

Service for Charlie N. “Dick” Parish, 96, will be at 1 p.m. today at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash. Vault burial will follow at Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Parish, who was born in Guntersville, Ala., died Friday.

He worked as a school bus driver for the Benge School District for more than 30 years. He also worked as a mechanic.

He was a member of the Benge Community Church, the Benge Grange, the Benge Volunteer Fire Department and the Adams County Historical Society.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Marion; two sons, Barney Parish of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Paul Parish of Kennewick; two daughters, Joyce Lund of Othello, Wash., and Joanne Bratsch of Beaverton, Ore.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dick Parish Memorial Fund for the Benge School District.

Kathleen Ryan Spokane

Funeral Mass for Kathleen Patricia Ryan, 93, is set for 10 a.m. today at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Ryan, who was born in LaSalle, Mont., died Thursday.

She worked at Gonzaga University in the guidance counseling department to assist returning veterans after World War II. She later became a homemaker.

She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Her husband, Donald, died in 1971.

Survivors include two sons, James Ryan of Port Ludlow, Wash., and the Rev. William Ryan, S.J., of Spokane; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Donald Ryan Memorial Scholarship at Gonzaga University.

Betty Barron Spokane

Service for Betty C. Barron, 78, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph’s Trentwood Chapel. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Barron, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday.

She worked as a lab technician at Kaiser Aluminum before her retirement.

She was a charter member of Eastern Washington Chow Chow Club and was a member of the Valley Lady Elks.

She is survived by three sons, Richard Barron of Kalispell, Mont., Lonnie Barron of Boring, Ore., and Steven Barron of Morgan Hill, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Gordon Streicher Medical Lake

Service for Gordon L. Streicher, 77, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Streicher, who was born in Belpry, Kan., died Friday.

He was an Army veteran and worked as a beer truck driver.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge No.2, the Teamsters Union and the Active Club.

Mr. Streicher is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nell; a son, Alan Streicher of Twin Lakes, Idaho; a daughter, Elizebeth Moore of Spokane; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Adrian Bafus Endicott, Wash.

Visitation for Adrian Bafus, 82, will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash. Service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott. Interment will follow at Endicott Cemetery.

Born in Endicott, Mr. Bafus died Friday.

He graduated from Endicott High School in 1932 and received a bachelor of arts degree in agricultural education in 1940 from Washington State College.

He taught agriculture at Reardan High School before joining the Army in 1941.

Mr. Bafus served in World War II and received the Bronze Star and the American Defense Service Medal.

In 1943 he married Evelyn Plaster in Reardan.

He later worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Cheney. In 1950 he and his wife began farming near Endicott, and in 1977 they retired.

He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity, Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott, Winona Grange and the Washington Association of Wheat Growers. He served on the Endicott School Board for 21 years.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ronald Bafus of Richland, Darrell Bafus of Endicott and Allan Bafus of Spokane; a daughter, Marlene Rorke of Sandpoint; a sister, Amelia Libbey of Spokane; six grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren.

Joseph Durgan Cheney

Vigil service for Joseph Michael Durgan, 78, will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Charles Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Durgan, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

He became a professional golfer in 1938 and was co-founder of the Lilac Invitational Golf Tournament.

He lived in the area for 44 years and was a member of the Professional Golfers’ Association and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Dorothy; two sons, Joseph and John Durgan, both of Spokane; a daughter, Kathleen Boehm of Spokane; two brothers, Kevin and Richard Durgan, both of Spokane; two sisters, Rosaleen Rosgen of Colfax and Pat Lunderhausen of Spokane; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Frances Van Orman Spokane

Visitation for Frances A. Van Orman, 78, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Post Falls Cemetery.

Born in O’Connell, Wis., Mrs. Van Orman died Friday.

She moved to the Spokane area in 1949 from Gladstone, Mich.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Duane; three sons, Rick Sargent of Spokane, John Konte of Homosassa, Fla., and Craig Van Orman of Post Falls; two daughters, Charolotte McMurray of Woodinville, Wash., and Sharon Sweet of Spokane; three sisters, Lydia Adams, Jean Sowers and Mina Beauchamp, all of Coeur d’Alene; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Florence Peterson Spokane

Graveside service for Florence Ann Peterson, 73, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.

Born in Pendleton, Ore., Mrs. Peterson died Saturday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1942.

Mrs. Peterson, a 70-year resident of Spokane, was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Indian Trail Community Church, Corbin Senior Center and Pillars.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Leslie; two sons, Keith Peterson of Spokane and Craig Peterson of Boise; a daughter, Karen Spaulding of Salem, Ore.; her mother, Dora Lidke of Spokane; two brothers, William and Donald Lidke, both of Spokane; a sister, Catherine Stanfill of Spokane; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jack Johnson Newman Lake

Service for Jack R. Johnson, 66, was Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Otis Orchards. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Trentwood.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, died Sept. 4.

He graduated from Central Valley High School in 1950.

Mr. Johnson served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

In 1980, after 25 years of service, he retired as a captain from the Spokane Valley Fire Department.

He was a member of the Spokane Valley Elks. He also was a Webelo leader, a Little League baseball coach, and a founder of Jack’s Workshop social club.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Rachell; a son, Eric Johnson of Spokane; and a brother, Darryl Johnson.

Robert Yonkie Keaau, Hawaii

Service for Robert M. Yonkie, 70, was Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Born in Spokane, he died Sept. 8.

Mr. Yonkie was an Army veteran and worked for Gale Mechanical for more than 30 years.

He moved to Hawaii eight months ago.

Mr. Yonkie was a founding member of St. Peter’s Parish, a member of Swap ‘n’ Swing Square Dance Club and Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union Local 44.

His wife of 34 years, Donna, died in 1982.

Survivors include four daughters, Marilyn Yonkie of Spokane, Nancy Titus of Titusville, Fla., Kathy Breitenbach of Renton, Wash., and Suanne Largent of Boise; his mother, Ethel Yonkie of Spokane; a sister, Beryl Gallaway of Grandview, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Fredrick Floether Lind, Wash.

Service for Fredrick Floether, 78, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Lind Zion Congregational United Church of Christ. Vault burial will follow at Lind Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Floether, a lifetime Lind resident, died Friday.

He was a farmer.

Mr. Floether was a member of the Zion Congregational United Church of Christ, where he was a former deacon and sang in the choir.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Irma; two daughters, Gloria Daniel of Hermiston, Ore., and Arlene Tibergien of Seattle; a sister, Erna Atkerson of Lind; and two grandchildren.
