Benefit Twinbill Set For Saturday
If it appears North Idaho high school football teams have done nothing but swap opponents the first two weeks, you’re right.
The trend continues this weekend. We say weekend because not all games will be played Friday.
The annual Shriners Doubleheader in Moscow - which benefits the children’s hospital in Spokane - has been moved to Saturday afternoon in the Kibbie Dome.
Until this year, the doubleheader has featured the four teams from the Quad-Cities area (Pullman, Moscow, Lewiston, Clarkston).
However, Pullman, which dropped to classification 2A in Washington’s realignment, dropped Lewiston from its schedule and Clarkston did likewise with Moscow.
Moscow and Clarkston will play in this year’s twinbill, but Lake City and Coeur d’Alene have replaced Lewiston and Pullman.
In the opener at 1 p.m., Coeur d’Alene (1-1), fresh off its first win under new coach Shawn Amos, takes on Clarkston (0-1), a 21-7 loser in its opener at Lake City last week. In the second game, at about 4, Lake City (2-0) will meet Moscow (0-2).
Cost is $7 for adults, $4 for students. No single-game admission price is offered.
The benefit games were moved to Saturday because the second game on the traditional Friday night didn’t finish until close to midnight.
Seniors from all four teams visited the Shriners hospital in Spokane on Wednesday, meeting children and eating lunch with them.
LC figures to have its toughest challenge to date against Moscow, which is much better than its winless record indicates. The Bears’ speed and their athletic skill players could cause the Timberwolves problems on the artificial surface.
The challenge for Moscow is defending against the Wingbone and containing LC’s quick senior fullback, Scott Bushnell.
CdA will regain the services of junior running back Pat Goodwin.
Goodwin rushed for 159 yards on 12 carries in the first half of the Viks’ 28-14 win over Mt. Spokane last week. But he was ejected just before halftime for what was ruled an illegal block below the waist.
A new Idaho rule calls for any athlete ejected to sit out the following event. Amos appealed Goodwin’s ejection, saying the block wasn’t violent and claiming Goodwin didn’t know such a block was illegal. Goodwin was reinstated Tuesday.
In Friday games involving Inland Empire and Frontier league teams, Post Falls (1-0-1) visits East Valley (0-1) and Lewiston (2-0) is at Cheney (0-1).
Post Falls is coming off a thrilling 20-14 win on the last play of the game over Cheney. Lewiston collected its 14th straight victory with a 41-3 hammering of EV.
Sandpoint (2-0) travels to Boise to take on Borah (2-0).
In Intermountain League openers, Kellogg (0-2) visits preseason favorite Lakeland (0-1-1) and highflying St. Maries travels to muchimproved Priest River. Both teams are 3-0.
All night games begin at 7.
In North Star League eight-man games, Lakeside (2-0 league, 2-1 overall) goes to struggling Mullan (0-2) and Clark Fork (2-0, 2-1) is at Kootenai (1-2). Both games begin at 3:30 p.m.. Falls Christian (1-2) breaks from league play and travels to Washington to meet Lind (0-1).
Ski, er, running
The ski season is still a couple months off, but Schweitzer Mountain Resort will be the site of some downhill activity Saturday.
Most of the area’s cross country teams will compete in the Sandpoint/Schweitzer Invitational, a change from the usual layout at Hidden Lakes Country Club.
The Sandpoint meet is recognized as the first major invite of the season. The new course is rugged and incorporates brushy, rocky trails for mountain bikes or ski runs. Racing begins at 11 a.m.
Will not sign early
Sandpoint’s wrestling phenom Jared Lawrence, undefeated at 93-0 through three seasons, has decided against signing early this fall.
Lawrence has planned fall visits to Minnesota, where his brother, Brett, will be a redshirt freshman, Michigan State and Lehigh.
