Enrollment Up At Deer Park Schools

Figures show that the Deer Park School District enrolled more than 1,800 students this year, nearly 100 more than predicted.

“We’re looking at increases at almost every grade level,” said Wayne Leonard, Deer Park’s business manager. Leonard, who attributes the growth to population increases, said school budgets and other programs are based on enrollment counts.

“If the growth were just at the (Deer Park) high school, then I’d say it were something else,” he said. “But we’re seeing growth all the way across the board. I’d imagine we got more kids from Spokane and Mead.”

Budding journalists

The National Scholastic Press has awarded Deer Park High School’s newspaper, the STAG, a first-class honor rating with marks of distinction for coverage, content, and leadership for last year’s issues.

And at Deer Park Junior High, the “Morning Bulletin” debuted on television screens in each classroom. Students Josh Bowman and Kash Kinder anchored the program with the help of a new on-site production lab.

The two associated student body officers produced and anchored the live reports designed to give their classmates up-to-the-minute news on what’s happening at school.

The new lab is a joint venture between the students and Fire District No.4.
