Fortunately, This Comic Has Found Some Relief

We’re used to hearing funny things from sitcom star Drew Carey, but there’s a serious side to his new autobiography, “Dirty Jokes and Beer: Stories of the Unrefined.”

“When I was 9, I was sexually molested,” Carey writes in the book, which will be excerpted in next week’s TV Guide. “Hey, that ought to sell some books, huh?

“Not even my family knows that. All my life I lived with it buried inside me, like a Playboy hidden under the mattress.”

Carey says the childhood trauma contributed to his severe depression and two suicide attempts, but adds that some good came of it.

“God gave me a second and third chance to accept being alive and imperfect,” he says. “That’s what I’m going to be: alive, taking chances, making mistakes and enjoying every minute of it.”

Loose talk

Oprah Winfrey pal Gayle King, on her new talk show (in Newsweek): “We’re looking for people with all of their teeth. Not people from trailer parks. I’m looking for articulate people.”

Frankie Avalon turns 57 today.

But could you really call that ‘skinny’ dipping?

Speaking of talk show hosts, Rosie O’Donnell had a confession to make when guest Kimberly Williams (“Father of the Bride”) told about getting caught swimming in the nude as a college student: “I have a similar story as well. I went skinny-dipping a couple of years ago in Miami Beach with some friends, and the cops showed up.” O’Donnell stayed underwater and held her breath while her friends distracted the authorities.

Actually, it sounds like Joan has sharper claws

And speaking of actors turned authors, Joan Collins, who had two novels rejected by Random House, gets even in her forthcoming memoir, “Second Act” - particularly with former editor Joni Evans: “I suspected Evans was going to be a Judas, and I was soon proved right. This bottle blond … with her leathery orange skin attempted a weak smile in my direction, then started ripping my novels to shreds.”

It’s a drag getting sand in your Bruno Maglis

In her new book, “The Other Woman,” former O.J. Simpson girlfriend Paula Barbieri says she doubts he murdered his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson - although after breaking up with him the morning of the killings, and later hearing the news, she admits wondering: “Had I somehow set off this terrible chain of events?” Barbieri also reveals Simpson “was hardly the sexual Superman the world may have assumed,” and adds that he hated to make out on the beach.

Guess that would rule O.J. out on both counts

Almost 25 years after the publication of her notorious “Fear of Flying,” Erica Jong admits that she never experienced one of the “zipless” couplings that she immortalized in the novel. “And at this point in my life,” she continued, “I do not think that I would have sex with anyone who is not a dear friend and champion.”
