Methodists Solicit Goods For Refugees

Nina Culver Correspondent

Methodist churches in Spokane are gathering basic household items for refugees in Liberia who are living in camps and have lost everything to looting.

Organizers are looking for items that can become part of homecoming kits, such as bar soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, large bath towels and non-breakable cups and dishes.

Also needed are shallow bowls and plates for rice, long-handled metal cooking spoons, sharp knives, large tablespoons, candles and matches, blankets and sheets, and gardening tools such as hand shovels, rakes, trowels and hoes.

Organizers say there are some items that they can’t take, including dishes or other kitchen items made of glass or plastic, pots, pans and washcloths.

Items can be donated through Oct. 15 at the following churches: Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand; Moran United Methodist Church, 3601 E. 65th; and the United Methodist Church in Rockford, 217 S. First.

For more information, call the Rev. Karen Martin at 448-7102.
