Nike Backed Slaney

Compiled From Wire Services

With the formidable resources of Nike behind her, Mary Slaney needed only a two-day hearing to persuade USA Track and Field that she did not use performance-enhancing drugs.

Slaney, who has insisted for months she is innocent, still remains ineligible to compete pending a decision by the sport’s international governing body, the International Amateur Athletic Federation.

Slaney wasn’t commenting on the case. Her husband Richard said she wants a few days to study the ruling.

But Slaney’s lawyer, Jim Coleman, said he expects the IAAF to go along with the U.S. ruling clearing the most prominent American women’s distance runner.

Reineri said USATF has 15 days to document its decision.

Nike, which sponsors both Slaney and USA Track and Field, put its resources behind the runner in her fight to clear her name.
