Davis Plans Therapy Around Playoffs
Eric Davis is attempting to change the day he receives his weekly chemotherapy treatment so he will be available for all the Orioles’ first-round playoff games.
The Orioles likely will open the playoffs on Oct. 1, a Wednesday. That’s the day Davis usually receives chemotherapy as follow-up treatment for the colon cancer surgery he had June 13.
“I’m trying to change it from Wednesday to Friday. It can be done,” Davis said.
Blood clot doesn’t stop Gwynn
Tony Gwynn has played with a small blood clot in his right leg since August, the San Diego Padres outfielder revealed.
Gwynn said the blood clot was discovered when he was out of action Aug. 9-13 with kidney stones. The blood clot is not considered serious, Gwynn said, because it is not located in the main artery. The seven-time N.L. batting champion has been taking medication for the ailment. Gwynn said the clot has not affected his play.
Reds reward McKeon
The Cincinnati Reds gave manager Jack McKeon a one-year contract extension, rewarding him for healing a team torn apart by Ray Knight’s confrontational style. McKeon, 66, was hired as interim manager on July 25, when Knight was fired in large part because of the turmoil in the clubhouse. McKeon’s contract was up after this season and the Reds had planned to interview candidates when the season ended. But the club went 27-26 under McKeon and players openly lobbied for him to stay.
