In Case Of Rain, Valleyfest Will Go Right Ahead

Staff Reports

The “R” word is not in the official Valleyfest weather forecast.

Organizers are confident that it won’t rain at the Spokane Valley’s annual community event, being held today at Terrace View Park.

But, just in case… “If it rains, we go forth,” said Peggy Doering, Valleyfest chairwoman.

“We know that those events that can’t participate in rain won’t be there.”

The fun run, the Valleyfest parade and the pancake breakfast will all go on as planned.

Other events, however would not.

In heavy rain, the Spokane Symphony cannot perform because of the potential for damage to the musicians’ delicate instruments.

The symphony would attempt to play at least half its concert before abandoning ship, said Jonathan Martin, executive director of the symphony.

The 4 p.m. concert usually draws 2,000 listeners to Terrace View Park. It costs about $12,000 to bring the symphony to Valleyfest, Martin said.

Today’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with a high in the 70s.

Run, walk, whatever…

You gotta love an event that includes these directions: Run, walk, whatever around track.

It’s the West Valley Eagle Relay, the annual 12-hour fund-raising marathon next Saturday that West Valley High School counts on to raise money for activities and athletics.

The event is held at the high school’s track, with games, prizes, a dunk tank, breakfast, lunch and a spaghetti dinner. Teams of sponsors, including parents, students, staff, alumni and community members are asked to gather pledges for at least $350.

Contact Joe Feist at the high school for more information.

Montana trio to perform

The Montana Piano Trio, made up of musicians in residence at the University of Montana, will perform a community concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Berean Bible Church, 10910 E. Boone.

Violinist Margaret Nichols Baldridge, cellist Fern Glass Boyd and pianist Steven Helsa will perform works by Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

A $5 donation will be received at the door to help off-set the performers’ travel expenses, according to Spokane Valley piano teacher Marlene Haney, who organized the concert.

West Valley SCOPE meets

West Valley SCOPE will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Millwood Town Hall, 9103 E. Fredrick.

The main topic of discussion will be how to recruit new volunteers for the community-policing organization.
