Nba Pondering Lockout

Compiled From Wire Services

The NBA is considering whether to re-open the collective bargaining agreement and impose a lockout next summer, commissioner David Stern and deputy commissioner Russ Granik said.

The six-year labor agreement between the NBA and Players Association includes a re-opener clause that gives the league the right to rip up the accord after the 1997-98 season.

Granik said more than a third of the league’s 29 teams lost money last season. The league also is concerned about the shrinking middle class among players caused by a system in which superstars earn an unfair bulk of the money.

Three members of the 1996 Olympic basketball team and one member of the original Dream Team were among 10 players selected - but not announced - to represent the United States at the 1998 World Championships.

Shaquille O’Neal, Grant Hill, Gary Payton and Christian Laettner were among the selections. The others were Glen Rice, Chris Webber, Kevin Garnett, Vin Baker, Terrell Brandon and Allan Houston.
