Southern Miss Stops Nevada

Southern Mississippi built an early lead on Lee Roberts’ two touchdown passes and went on to beat Nevada 35-19 Saturday night in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Roberts completed 26 of 46 passes for 356 yards, including the two first-quarter TDs that put Southern Miss (2-1) up for good.

Nevada (1-3), which gets about 80 percent of its offense in the air, got within 21-19 on Chris Lemon’s two rushing TDs in the third quarter and a 46-yard field goal by Damon Shea early in the fourth.

Nevada quarterback Eric Bennett replaced John Dutton in the first quarter after the starter suffered a jammed shoulder. Bennett finished 13 of 27 for 209 yards with three interceptions.

North Texas 30, Texas Tech 27

In Lubbock, Texas, Jason Mills found Bo Harrison for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:04 remaining to lift the Eagles (2-2) over the Red Raiders (1-2).

Mills threw for two touchdowns and running back Hut Allred ran for two. Texas Tech quarterback Zebbie Lethridge completed 31 of 52 passes for 359 yards before leaving with a right ankle injury in the fourth quarter.

New Mexico 25, Utah State 22

At Logan, Utah, Graham Leigh threw for one touchdown and ran for the winning score to lift the Lobos (4-0) over the Aggies (2-2).
