Some oldtimers say they can hum the melody of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad,” but don’t know the tune of “The Eyes of Texas.” Or vice versa. Not so, not so. They’re the same.

Q. Sugar once sold in 15-pound cone-shaped loaves about three feet high. How did a buyer, who couldn’t afford that much, get a little sugar off the loaf?

A. With pliers-like nippers. They had sharp blades on rounded arms. You still see them in antique stores.
