U-Hi Finally Gives Volleyball Coach A Victory

Coach Mike Welch’s wait is over at University.

Angela McAuley’s 13 kills and Crissa Poole’s 45 assists Saturday led U-Hi to a 7-15, 15-8, 15-9, 15-12 Greater Spokane League volleyball win at North Central.

Second-year coach Welch had been 0-21 in GSL matches, including last year’s 0-16 season. Alice Stearns and Amber Carter of the Indians (1-5) had 12 kills apiece.

Also in the GSL, Mead (6-0) stayed on top as Mindy Wallis had 23 assists and served the final three points of a 15-11, 13-15, 15-8, 16-14 win at Lewis and Clark (4-2).

Staci Schuerman had four kills as Mead rallied from a 10-2 first-game deficit. Carlin Oeljen’s three kills led LC to a 13-6 second-game edge. LC scored 11 consecutive points for a 14-13 fourth-game lead before a Lindsay Murphy kill ended the night.

Missy Blackshire’s 15 kills and Julie Weatherred’s 10 digs helped host Ferris (6-1) bounce back from Friday’s loss to Mead with a 15-8, 15-4, 15-7 win over Gonzaga Prep (3-3).

Prep’s Rose Sacco had 16 assists.

Michelle Etter finished with 30 kills, 12 blocks and eight digs as Shadle Park (5-1) rallied for a 15-7, 14-16, 10-15, 15-11, 15-5 win at Rogers (3-3) and took over third place alone.

Monica Abrahamson had 25 kills and Taneisha Tilque 15 digs for the Pirates, who swept Shadle last year.

Rikki Jackson served the last seven points to lead visiting Central Valley (2-4) over Mt. Spokane 15-10, 15-13, 15-3. Danielle Stewart totaled 11 assists for the Wildcats.

Raejean Hedrick had two kills and a block to break a fourth-game tie as host Colville (3-0) topped Pullman 15-12, 13-15, 15-13, 15-11 in the Great Northern League. Colville’s Lindsey Braff added 17 digs . Becky Davis had 11 digs for Pullman (1-2).

Football

Sean Wheeler rushed for 214 yards on 17 carries and Lakeside (1-1) amassed 395 yards for a 53-6 non-league win at Kettle Falls (0-2). Lakeside’s Mike Mortlock rushed for 74 yards and Mike Rowse completed 6 of 9.

In non-leaguers at the Shriners Classic in Moscow, Scott Bushnell rushed for 220 yards and two TDs on 15 carries as Lake City (3-0) notched a 36-6 win over Moscow (0-3).

Tom Lyden scored on two short runs in the first half to lead Clarkston (1-1) to a 21-14 win over Coeur d’Alene (1-2).

Girls soccer

Tracy Koesel had four goals and one assist to lead Riverside (2-0) to a 13-0 GNL win over visiting Chewelah (0-3) at Chattaroy.

Elsewhere, Kelly Pritchard scored twice, giving her seven in GNL matches, as first-place Pullman (3-0) won 3-0 at Deer Park (0-2-1).

Lindsay Day, Stacey McConnell and Jennifer Shannon scored to lift Colville (2-0-1) over visiting Lakeside (1-2-1), 3-0.
