Martin Wins Mbna 400

Compiled From Wire Services

Mark Martin didn’t outrace anyone, but he outgassed Kyle Petty to end 15 years of frustration at Dover Downs International Speedway in Delaware with a lucrative victory in the MBNA 400.

Martin’s first Winston Cup win at the Monster Mile came in his 22nd Dover start. He had finished second four times. Petty’s Pontiac finished about 2 feet behind the Chevrolet of seven-time series champion Dale Earnhardt, who also completed the first 400-mile race at Dover with just three pit stops.

Jacques Villeneuve of Canada drew within a point of Michael Schumacher in the season’s standings by winning the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg.
