Piazza Goes Extremely Yard
Mike Piazza became only the second player ever to hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium on Sunday night when he homered off Colorado’s Frank Castillo in the third inning.
Piazza’s drive, an estimated 478-footer, hit the roof of the pavilion in left field and bounced over, giving the Los Angeles Dodgers a 4-1 lead.
The only other player to hit a fair ball out of Dodger Stadium was Pittsburgh’s Willie Stargell, who did it twice - both times to right field. The Hall of Famer accomplished the feat on Aug. 5, 1969, off Alan Foster, and again on May 8, 1973, off Andy Messersmith. The first ball traveled 506 feet and cleared the pavilion. The second went 470 feet and hit the roof and left the park.
