Eastern Climbs To 17th In I-Aa Football Poll Eagles’ Correa Collects Honor For His 97-Yard Return For A Td

Eastern Washington, coming off a 31-14 Big Sky Conference win at Portland State, jumped to 17th in the ESPN/USA Today NCAA Division I-AA football poll released Monday.

The Eagles are unbeaten in three games and play host to Weber State this Saturday at 6:35 p.m. at Woodward Stadium in Cheney. Eastern is off to its first 3-0 start in 11 seasons, and will try to win its first four games for the first time since the 1985 squad began 5-0.

Eastern jumped four spots in the poll of sportswriters and broadcasters. In the Sports Network poll of sports information directors, it remains 21st.

In addition, EWU wide receiver/return specialist Steve Correa was honored as the Big Sky Conference special teams player of the week.

Correa had a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter after PSU cut the deficit to 24-7. It was the eighth-longest kickoff return in school history.

It was the first kickoff return for a TD of Correa’s two-year career. He had non-scoring returns of 59 and 64 yards last year as he finished with a 27.2 average on 13 returns.

Correa also caught a 20-yard touchdown pass earlier in the game. He had four catches for 50 yards.

He holds Eastern’s school record for career average yards per catch (21.0) after setting the single-season record (23.4) last year. He has averaged 23 yards in the 62 times he’s touched the ball as at Eagle.
