Human Rights Activists Protest Internet Sex Trade
Human rights activists voice concern about increasing use of the Internet to publicize prostitution, sex tours and the mail-order-bride industry.
“It is almost mind-boggling what is on there,” said Aurora Javate de Dios, executive director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women, based in Manila, Philippines. “It is redefining the whole industry because it is so accessible to so many men.”
One group offers users detailed information on where to find prostitutes in Nevada and about 75 countries, including Thailand and the Philippines. Would-be customers are told where to find particular women, what they can expect to pay for each service and which hotels will let them bring women to their rooms. Another news group offers advice on finding mail-order brides.
“These girls want and need to leave (the Philippines),” said one operator of a mail-order business.
