Dance Theatre Northwest Holding Auditions For ‘Toy Shelf’
Audition season is well underway, and this week’s selections offer a wide variety of roles for both adults and children.
Dance Theatre Northwest will hold auditions for its December production of “The Toy Shelf” from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, at The Academy of Dance, 14214 E. Sprague.
“The Toy Shelf,” an original production choreographed by Janet Wilder, will be presented at The Met on Dec. 14.
Roles are available for 26 children, with varying requirements: 12 children between 7 and 13 years old, and up to 4 feet 9 inches tall, with one to two years of dance training; three “bears” between 9 and 13 years old, between 4 feet 2 inches, and 5 feet 4 inches tall, with two to four years of ballet; five “skunks” between 6 and 8 years old, up to 4 feet 4 inches tall, with one year of dance; and four to six “dolls,” at least 9 years old, up to 5 feet 7 inches tall, with three to five years of dance.

Spokane Civic Theatre will hold tryouts at Cavanaugh’s Inn at the Park, for “Once On This Island,” a Caribbean adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” at 2 and 7 p.m. on Oct. 5; and 7 p.m. on Oct. 6.
Director Jean Hardie has roles for 10 men and women from teenagers to adult, and one actress to appear about 12 years old. All must sing and dance.
Auditioners should prepare a 90-second song not from the planned musical. Sheet music is required and an accompanist will be provided.

Now is the time …
Spokane Civic Theatre is registering students for 12-week drama and acting classes which begin Monday.
Classes for students in grades 1-3 will be from 4 to 5 p.m., Mondays; grades 4-6 meet from 4 to 5:15 p.m., Tuesdays; grades 7-9 will meet 5:15 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays. Cost is $55.
Adult acting classes, for high school sophomores and older, will be from noon to 1:30 p.m., Saturdays. Cost is $60.
An eight-week class in Tai Chi will also be offered Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m., with a fee of $64.

Art classes
Class schedules are available for the fall quarter at the Corbin Art Center, sponsored by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Dept. The term begins Oct. 6.
A variety of day and evening classes will be offered for children, teens and adults. Offerings include classes on traditional oil painting, pine needle basketry, wheat weaving, art through storytellling and jewelry beading.

Music in the mountains
Duo Cantico, a classical piano and flute duo from Seattle, will perform a benefit concert for The Cutter Theatre in Metaline Falls, Wash., at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Pianist Brian Chronister and flutist Klaus Liebetanz will include selections from Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert and Francis Poulenc. They will also present information on the music and composers.

Drama with a message The Spokane County Domestic Violence Consortium is sponsoring the play, “… and things that go bump in the night,” a portrayal of the effects of intimate partner violence and sexual assault on children.
The Thursday-noon performance, produced by Seattle’s Municipal Light and Theater Company, will be in Eastern Washington University’s Showalter Auditorium. The production is also sponsored by CEASE, Men Against Violence on Campus, and the Women’s Studies Program.
Admission to the public show is free. A panel discussion follows the hour-long play.
Calling ceramic artists
“Experimental Surfaces,” workshops for ceramic artists and ceramic art students, will be at the Spokane Art School on Wednesday and Oct. 7 and 14.
Lenora Simon Lopez will demonstrate how to work with non-traditional surface treatments, such as terra sigalatta, textured low-fire glazes, stains, oxides, wax and shoe polish.
