Gordon Qualifies 11th
Jeff Gordon will start in the 11th position in defense of his title in the Hanes 500 today in Martinsville, Va.
With only six races remaining, Gordon has a comfortable 105-point lead over Mark Martin. He is just three victories from tying Richard Petty’s modern record of 13 victories in a season, set in 1977.
Spokane’s Chad Little qualified 34th.
Brazil’s Mauricio Gugelmin turned in the fastest qualifying lap (240.942 mph) in the history of Indy-car racing as he captured the pole position for the Marlboro 500 at the new California Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
It is the third pole of his Indy-car career, all this season in his Mercedes-powered PacWest Motorsports Group Reynard.
Mika Hakkinen of Finland, in a McLaren-Mercedes, won the first pole position of his career today, leading the qualifers for today’s Luxembourg Grand Prix in Nuerburgring, Germany.
Jacques Villeneuve won the Williams-Renault internal showdown by beating teammate Heinz-Harald Frentzen. More importantly, he was faster than Michael Schumacher.
Schumacher leads Villeneuve by one point in the drivers’ championship, 68 to 67, with three races remaining in the season.
Schumacher will start from the third row on the grid.
