How they scored

First quarter

WSU 7, Boise State 0

Ryan Leaf 10-yard run, Rian Lindell kick. 45 yards, eight plays, 2:47. Michael Black carries four times for 33 yards during a drive that is marred by three penalties, including two against the Cougars.

WSU 14, BSU 0 Kevin McKenzie 10-yard pass from Leaf, Lindell kick. 99 yards, 12 plays, 5:00. Cougars take over at their own 1-yard line after an 81-yard punt-and-roll by BSU’s Jeff Davis. But WSU finds room to work after Leaf’s QB draw gains 6 yards on first down. Black, on his way to 93 first-quarter rushing yards, carries six times for 55 yards on the drive.

Second quarter

WSU 17, BSU 0

Lindell 57-yard field goal. 1 yard, five plays, 2:00. WSU goes backward in sea of penalty flags, offsetting Shawn McWashington’s 20-yard reception to the BSU 20.

WSU 24, BSU 0 Shawn Tims 73-yard punt return, Lindell kick. BSU’s Davis shanks punt that bounces at the WSU 27. As Isaac Henderson and Reggie Etheridge get ready to down the ball, Tims swoops in and returns down the right sideline untouched.

WSU 31, BSU 0 McKenzie 37-yard pass from Leaf, Lindell kick. 81 yards, two plays, 32 seconds. Leaf’s play action fools everyone on 44-yard completion to McWashington. McKenzie scores on the next play, beating free safety Isaac Henderson.

WSU 38, BSU 0 Black 8-yard run, Lindell kick. 61 yards, six plays, 1:36. Penalties continue to be WSU’s biggest obstacle as the Cougars have a TD nullified for the third time. But Leaf finds tight end Love Jefferson for gains of 29 and 22 on the drive.

Third quarter

WSU 41, BSU 0

Lindell 32-yard field goal. 46 yards, 10 plays, 3:24. Leaf and McWashington nearly hook up for 16-yard touchdown, but Leaf’s pass is slightly underthrown and McWashington traps the ball.

WSU 48, BSU 0 Chris Jackson 11-yard pass from Leaf, Lindell kick. 78 yards, six plays, 2:36. Leaf completes 4 of 4 passes for 49 yards on the drive.

Fourth quarter

WSU 51, BSU 0

Lindell 37-yard field goal. 24 yards, five plays, 1:32. Backup QB Steve Birnbaum completes a 26-yard pass to Tims.

WSU 58, BSU 0

Nian Taylor 11-yard pass from Birnbaum, Lindell kick. 16 yards, two plays, 41 seconds. Ho and hum. Att. - 34,131
