Shouldn’t that be code of misconduct?

From the Chicago Tribune’s Hit & Run column: “First, Fresno State recruited a convicted spouse abuser for its basketball team. Then came allegations that another player punched his ex-girlfriend and choked her.

“So now a Fresno State professor is demanding a code of conduct for athletes.

“What rotten timing. Just when Jerry Tarkanian redecorated the school holding tank.”

So much for an end to the Cold War

The Pittsburgh Steelers had hoped linebacker Greg Lloyd’s return from a knee injury would bolster a defense ravaged by the free-agency losses of linebacker Chad Brown and cornerbacks Rod Woodson and Willie Williams.

But the only thing Lloyd has been hitting these days is reporters. The other day, he shoved a 33-year-old Russian television journalist on his way out of the Steelers’ locker room.

Vladimir Artemyuk, who is working on a temporary assignment for a Pittsburgh station, was leaving the locker room when Lloyd came up behind him, pushed him out of the way and walked quickly past without saying a word.

“Is it a habit among American sportsmen to behave like that?” a startled Artemyuk asked.

No, Vladimir, usually American sportsmen treat reporters much worse.

Where do we sign up?

Clemson offers an area of study not commonly found in university class schedules: drag racing.

“This partnership gives our students real-world opportunities in a high-pressure business environment,” said Steffan Rogers, Clemson’s vice president for academic affairs.

Next year, they’ll combine it with beer tasting.

Sex, spies and videotape

A Kingdome employee was suspended after admitting to setting up a video camera in the Sea Gals’ changing room.

Police found the video camcorder hidden in a ceiling light fixture after one of the Seattle Seahawks cheerleaders noticed something amiss as she tilted her head back while drinking a soda.

“It was kind of obvious, but kind of not,” said Joanne Elledge, spokeswoman for King County Police.

The camera was discovered just 70 minutes before a recent Seahawks game.

Team officials could not be reached for comment.

The employee, who turned himself in, has not been charged with a crime.

“He’s been very cooperative with the investigation,” Elledge said.

In Washington state, it’s illegal to record conversations without permission, but laws regarding videotaped images are less defined, making it difficult to determine if a crime has been committed.
