Princess Diana’s death in a paparazzi-linked French traffic accident came as no real shock to Prince Albert of Monaco.

“I can give you countless accounts of different car chases in Paris in which 15 to 20 photographers were trying to follow us or use their cars to create road blocks,” the prince said during a U.S. visit over the weekend. “Fortunately, these were never at high speed.”

Albert’s mother, movie star Grace Kelly, also was killed in a 1982 car crash.

The prince said he has tried to shield his younger sisters, princesses Stephanie and Caroline, from publicity.

Still, Albert added: “I can’t always be there to protect them. They’ve been under intense scrutiny from the press and harassed by the press and the paparazzi.”

With Kitty Kelley under fire for her new book about Britain’s rulers, “The Royals,” some friends are flocking to her defense, including Bryant Gumbel and Erica Jong. “Her information is right and interesting, so what is this frenzy all about?” Olivia Goldsmith, the author of “The First Wives Club,” said. “There was no exploitation on her part, and in fact, she was extremely supportive of a woman who was abused by the first dysfunctional family of the British Isles.”

Brooke Shields frets that in all the hubbub over Diana, the loss of her former boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, is being overlooked. “Not much has been said about Dodi, and for those of us who knew him, there should be some recognition,” Shields says in TV Guide. “He had a tenderness I don’t think many were aware of. He gave me one of my first dogs.”

The one in his head, however, is beyond repair

Actor/musician Dudley Moore is expected to make a full recovery from last week’s surgery to repair both a blocked artery and a tiny hole in his heart. Last month, the 62-year-old Moore filed - for a second time - for divorce from wife No. 4, Nicole Rothschild.

Barry Bostwick, who underwent successful surgery for prostate cancer in July, will receive a belated get-well gift on the Oct. 15 episode of “Spin City,” when, as the fictitious mayor of New York, he has a fling with none other than Marla Maples Trump.

And in real-life affairs, the Playboy mag that hits the stands today includes a photo spread of Suzen Johnson, the former flight attendant who tells all about her May tryst with sportscaster Frank Gifford.
