Mourning Hurt As Heat Win

Associated Press

The Miami Heat routed the visiting Boston Celtics 121-95 on Tuesday night but lost center Alonzo Mourning with a broken left cheekbone.

The 6-foot-10 center faced surgery Tuesday night and his status was uncertain, the team said.

Mourning, who averages 19.2 points and 9.7 rebounds, was injured during a scrap for a loose ball with 10:07 left in the third quarter when he collided with Boston’s Andrew DeClercq.

Voshon Lenard had 26 points and Dan Majerle 16 to pace Miami, which shot 59 percent and made 11 of 19 3-pointers in winning for the 25th time in 29 games.

Lakers triumph

Rick Fox had 31 points and 10 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Toronto Raptors 114-105 in Toronto.

The Lakers, who won their 13th game in 15 starts, led most of the game and didn’t allow Toronto get closer than four points in the second half.

Michael Jordan’s defense prevented Grant Hill from scoring at the end of regulation, and the Chicago Bulls extended their season-high winning streak to 10 games with a 106-101 overtime victory over Detroit in Chicago.

Two days after setting an NBA record for futility - scoring a record-low 55 points, the Indiana Pacers set a club record with 14 3-pointers - six by Chris Mullin - as they defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 128-106 in Indianapolis.

At New York, Tim Duncan scored 25 points and David Robinson had 24 as the San Antonio Spurs overpowered the undersized New York Knicks 95-78 Tuesday night.

The Spurs, starting three 7-footers, had a more than 4-inch height advantage per man along the front line. Charles Oakley, at 6-9, was the tallest starter for the Knicks, whose two 7-footers, Patrick Ewing and Chris Dudley, are on the injured list.

At East Rutherford, N.J., Keith Van Horn scored 19 of his 22 points in the first quarter to give New Jersey the lead and Kerry Kittles kept the Nets in front late in a 105-90 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

It was the Nets’ first game since All-Star center Jayson Williams broke his right thumb, while Atlanta was without its two leading scorers. All-Star guard Steve Smith was out with fluid on his knee, while Christian Laettner was sidelined with a sprained ankle.

Jason Kidd had 21 points and sparked Phoenix with four 3-pointers in the second half as the visiting Suns pulled away to a 97-86 victory over the Houston Rockets.
