Losing Hand

Three playing cards that survived the Titanic sank at an auction in London Wednesday. Sotheby’s set a price of $40,000 for the two of spades, the king of spades and the three of clubs - but bidding stopped at $19,000. French aviator Pierre Marechal was playing with the cards on the evening of April 14, 1912, when the Titanic went down. Marechal survived and the cards, each bearing the fluttering flag of the White Star Line, were framed by his wife, Elisabeth. They were put on sale by Marechal’s grandson.
