In 1865: Union forces occupied the Confederate capital of Richmond, Va.

In 1882: Outlaw Jesse James was shot to death in St. Joseph, Mo., by Robert Ford, a member of his own gang.

In 1948: President Truman signed the Marshall Plan, which gave more than $5 billion to 16 European countries.

In 1968: Less than 24 hours before he was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. told a rally, “It really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountain top, and I don’t mind.”

In 1996: Theodore Kaczynski was arrested, accused of being the Unabomber. He later pleaded guilty to 13 federal charges.
