Blakesley Escapes, Preserves Win

Talk about getting out of a mess.

John Blakesley (1-3) worked himself out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to preserve Gonzaga Prep’s 9-8 Greater Spokane League baseball victory over host Central Valley Thursday.

It was the Bears’ (6-2, 5-1) first league loss of the season and, with Mead and Ferris winning, created a three-team knot atop the GSL standings.

The Bullpups (3-5, 3-3) scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take the final lead.

Chad Adamson had three hits on the night for CV, including a solo home run to lead off the fifth.

Joe Chimienti went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer and two stolen bases as Mead (6-2, 5-1) downed visiting Rogers (3-5, 2-4) 12-2.

Dan Thigpen (2-0) threw a one-hitter, striking out seven and walking two against a Pirates team that has managed one hit in its past two games.

The Panthers’ Sam Hess was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and leadoff hitter Kyle Ellenz was 2 for 3, scoring three runs.

At Ferris, the Saxons brought out the heavy lumber as Brian Munhall hit a pair of two-run homers, his fourth and fifth of the season, and Eric Sandberg hit a grand slam as the Saxons (6-2, 5-1) routed Mt. Spokane (1-7, 1-5) 15-5.

Cole Young led off the game with a home run for the Wildcats.

In Seafirst Stadium, University (3-5, 3-3) jumped out to a quick start, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings. The Titans went on to defeat the Highlanders (2-6, 1-5) 8-4.

U-Hi’s Joe Spear went 3 for 4, driving in two runs. Chet Womach cleared the bases for Shadle in the fourth with a three-RBI triple.

Titans starter Chris McMurtrey (1-0) struck out six in four innings.

At North Central, Lewis and Clark blanked the Indians (2-5, 1-5) 12-0 in a five-inning game. Jim Travis knocked in three runs with a single in the Tigers’ (6-2, 4-2) five-run, fourth inning. Jared Strasser fanned six batters, to improve to 3-1.
