Milton ‘Pete’ Petersen Chiloquin, Ore.

Memorial service for Milton Campbell “Pete” Petersen, 80, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Davenport’s Chapel of the Good Shepherd in Klamath Falls, Ore.

Mr. Petersen, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.

He served with the Army during World War II in the Philippines and Korea.

Mr. Petersen received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Washington State University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. He later received a master’s degree from the University of California in Berkeley.

He worked as an instructor at the University of California and later taught English at Washington State University for 24 years until his retirement as a full professor in 1981.

Mr. Petersen and his wife, Penny, moved in 1983 to Lakeside, Ore., where he was a member of the Lakeside Lions Club and the Lakeside Planning Commission and established the Lakeside Public Library, later named the Milton C. Petersen Library.

He was a member of the Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society, Sierra Club, the Concerned Friends of the Winema and numerous other environmental and conservation groups. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, had been an active supporter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society of the United States and other animal-protection organizations.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Penny; two sons, David Petersen of Chiloquin, Ore., and Haven Petersen of Seattle; a sister, Marjorie Wesley of Lakeside, Calif.; and a grandson.

Gerald Jackson Deer Park

Graveside service for Gerald Lee Jackson, 72, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at the Wildrose Prairie Cemetery. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jackson, who was born in Custer, S.D., died April 2 in Desert Hot Springs, Calif.

He graduated from Custer High School in 1944 and served in the Navy during World War II as a gunner on an amphibious landing craft. He served in Iwo Jima, Japan, and Saipan and Guam in the Mariana Islands.

Following the war, he returned to South Dakota, where he worked in agriculture-related businesses before opening his own appliance repair shop in Custer.

Mr. Jackson held civil service positions with the Forest Service and the Air Force, including at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, in 1970 and Fairchild Air Force Base in 1979.

He moved to Deer Park in 1979 and retired in 1981. He spent winters in Desert Hot Springs.

Mr. Jackson was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3067 in Deer Park, the Eagles Lodge in Deer Park and the Lions Club and served as an officer with the Spokane Area Square Dancers Association. He was a member of the Crazy Eights and Octo Plus Squares near Spokane.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette; a son, David Jackson of Rapid City, S.D.; three daughters, Linda Battson of Grand Forks, N.D., Barbara Slavens of St. Helena, Calif., and Carol Parriott of Redfield, S.D.; four stepchildren, Leslie and Ronald Ensor, both of Davenport, Wash., and Laura Holven and Jane Wall, both of Spokane; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Craig Oas Spokane

Funeral for Craig T. Oas, 63, was Thursday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Oas, who was born in Superior, Wis., died Tuesday.

He lived in Spokane for 50 years and worked as a Teamster truck driver for 38 years.

Mr. Oas was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Naval Reserve.

He was a coach at St. Patrick’s School for nine years and at St. Aloysius School for two years.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Phyllis; a daughter, Vickie of Spokane; two sons, David of Spokane and Steven of Vancouver, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Carolyn Dore Wenatchee

Memorial service for Carolyn Lee Dore, 74, will be at 11 a.m. April 18 at Jones and Jones Funeral Home in Wenatchee.

Miss Dore, who was born in Wenatchee, died Tuesday.

She graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1941 and from Eastern Washington College of Education in 1949.

She began teaching in 1949 at Finch Elementary School in Spokane, where she was in charge of after-school sports. She had been active with the all-city track and cross country meets and had started superstar programs.

Miss Dore planned and directed many workshops and track meets. She also was a scorekeeper and timekeeper for various athletic events and state tournaments.

She taught at Whitworth College, Gonzaga University and Pacific Lutheran University.

Miss Dore worked with Silver Spurs and was listed in Who’s Who for the state of Washington. She wrote articles for athletic journals and held offices in both local and state athletic organizations.

Miss Dore worked with Camp Fire Girls and during the summer months directed camps at Roseburg, Ore., Butte, Mont., and Pendleton, Ore. She was one of the first campers to attend Camp Fire Girls Camp Zanika-Lache on Lake Wenatchee. Her tenure there was from 1932 to 1965. During this period she held virtually all positions from bugler to director.

Miss Dore retired to Lake Chelan in 1979 and spent several years as a volunteer for Holden Village, the Chelan Boat Co., the Parks Department and the Forest Service.

Survivors include her mother, Cora Dore of Wenatchee.

Gardner Teall Coeur d’Alene

Service for Gardner F. Teall, 77, will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Hayden, Idaho. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Teall, who was born in Absarokee, Mont., died Tuesday.

He moved to Dalton Gardens, Idaho, in 1927 and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1938.

Mr. Teall moved to Longview, Wash., and in 1943 returned to Coeur d’Alene.

After serving with the Army in Europe during World War II, he returned to the Coeur d’Alene area and began working for Potlatch Forest in 1948. He retired as plant superintendent in 1982.

Mr. Teall served on the original committee for the Museum of North Idaho and was on the board of directors from 1968-93.

He was also past president of the board and a lifetime ex officio board member.

Mr. Teall was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Elks Lodge and North Idaho Fly Casters and was past director of the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of more than 56 years, Margie; two sons, Jeannie Edinger and Mardel Reynolds, both of Coeur d’Alene; two brothers, Jim Teall of Spokane and Bob Teall of Dalton Gardens; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Stuart Benshoof Spokane

Memorial service for Stuart R. Benshoof, 76, will be at 2 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park Sunset Chapel. Bunkers Memorial Gardens in Mesa, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Benshoof, who was born in New Rockford, N.D., died March 23 in Mesa, Ariz.

He served with the Coast Guard during World War II.

A longtime resident of Spokane, Mr. Benshoof was a retired State Farm Insurance agent and had spent his winters in Mesa.

His wife, Marion Benshoof, preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, Stuart Benshoof Jr. and Gary Hookom, both of Spokane; two daughters, Diana Benshoof-White and Carol Byron, both of Spokane; two brothers, Ken Benshoof of Portland and Vern Benshoof of Spokane; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Jim ‘B.J.’ Bjornstad Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Jim “B.J.” Borjnstad, 53, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Bjornstad, who was born in Spokane, died Monday.

He grew up in Coeur d’Alene and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1963. He also graduated from North Idaho Junior College.

Mr. Bjornstad was a musician and had played with two well-known Coeur d’Alene bands of the early 1960s, the Progress Hornsby Four and the Contempos.

He graduated from the University of Idaho and started a career as a sound engineer and technician.

Mr. Bjornstad had worked as a disc jockey at KAYO radio station in Seattle for four years and returned to Coeur d’Alene in 1976 to open a sound engineering business and portable disco.

He had also worked at KHQ and KVNI radio stations.

He was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Elks Lodge, Eagles Aerie and the American Legion.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Bjornstad of Spokane; and several uncles and cousins.

Ava Marie Hagen Spokane

Visitation for Ava Marie Hagen, 92, will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairmount Memorial Park’s Sunset Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Hagen, who was a 31-year resident of Spokane, died Tuesday.

She was born in Hatton, Wash., and graduated from Withworth College.

Mrs. Hagen worked as a school teacher for many years in the Spokane area.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Association of Wheat Growers.

Her husband, Clarence Hagen, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Leith Hagen of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Vonnie Hagen Dynes of Spokane; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Lois Wilbur Spokane

Graveside service for Lois Maxine Wilbur, 76, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilbur, who was a 75-year resident of Spokane, died Tuesday.

She was born in St. Maries and worked as a bookkeeper.

Mrs. Wilbur was a member of the Hillyard Baptist Church.

Her husband, Doran, died in 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Beitey and Sally Ann Wagner, both of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Bruce Allen Spokane

Funeral for Bruce J. Allen, 45, will be at 9 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. A private burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Allen, who was a 45-year resident of Spokane, died Wednesday.

Born in Billings, Mont., he served with the Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1474.

Mr. Allen worked as a carpenter for various companies.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Bernice and Antone Schwab of Spokane; his father, Edwin Allen of Roundup, Mont.; a brother, Michael Allen of Otis Orchards; and three sisters, Nancy Bright and Debra Wray, both of Spokane, and Karen DeLuz of Tacoma.

Charlotte Bailey Colville, Wash.

Funeral for Charlotte M. Bailey, 78, was Thursday at the Colville Christian Church. Burial followed at the Edwall Cemetery in Edwall, Wash. Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Colville was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bailey, who was born in Edwall, died Tuesday.

She graduated from Edwall High School in 1937 and worked as a supervisor for Pacific Northwest Bell until her retirement.

Mrs. Bailey had been a resident of Stevens County since 1981 and was a member of the Pioneers of Spokane.

Her husband, Ed Bailey, died in 1967.

Survivors include a sister, Kathryn Cobain of Colville; and a brother, Lawrence DeChenne of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Colville Christian Church.

Estelle Sprague Seattle

Memorial service for Estelle M. Sprague, 90, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthew Church, 1240 NE 127th in Seattle. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Holyrood Cemetery in Seattle. Bonney-Watson Capitol Hill Funeral Home in Seattle is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sprague, who was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., died Sunday.

She moved to Spokane when she was two years old.

Mrs. Sprague worked as a medical secretary in Spokane and in Seattle after she moved there in 1956.

She was later in charge of the medical secretaries for the executive staff at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.

Mrs. Sprague also served as a volunteer at Group Health Hospital in Seattle for more than 20 years.

Survivors include three sons, Richard and Thomas Sprague, both of Seattle, and David Sprague in Bangladesh; a daughter, Marie Travis of California; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Smith Tumwater, Wash.

Graveside service for Marjorie Smith, 89, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith, who was born in Humboldt, Iowa, died Sunday.

She graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa and received an honorary doctorate from Wesleyan College.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the PEO. She was president of PEO Chapter CL Spokane, president of the Washington state chapter in 1960 and was president of the international chapter from 1980 to 1981. She served on the international chapter’s centennial commission and on the board of the educational loan fund. In 1967 She was elected to the executive board of the international chapter and served in various offices for 14 years.

Mrs. Smith lived in Spokane from 1946 until 1982, when she moved to Panorama City, Wash. She moved to Tumwater in 1996.

Mrs. Smith, with her husband, Warren Smith, were founding members of Audubon Park United Methodist Church.

Her husband died in 1980.

There are no surviving family members.

Reinhold Leitz Latah

Visitation for Reinhold Leitz, 75, will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield. Graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rosewood Cemetery in Fairfield. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairfield.

Mr. Leitz, who was a lifetime resident of Latah, died Sunday.

He graduated from Latah High School and farmed at Latah.

Mr. Leitz was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Fairfield. Luther League, Toastmasters and Good Sam Recreational Vehicle Club and served on the board of Camp Lutherhaven for 21 years.

Survivors include his wife, Ena; a son, David Leitz; a daughter, Diane Peters; and three grandchildren.
