Sluggers Bat Cheney To A Split
Toby Gilbert hit a three-run homer and winning pitcher Pat Stiffler had five runs batted in as Cheney defeated East Valley 22-6 to salvage a split of Saturday’s doubleheader between Frontier League baseball leaders at EV.
The Knights (7-3, 3-1) won the opener 7-2 as Kris Allen (3-1) pitched a four-hitter and singled in the go-ahead run in the fourth, and Justin Lanphere hit a two-run homer in the third.
Stiffler struck out four in three innings of relief and Steve Hull had three RBIs for the Blackhawks (3-6, 3-1) in the second game. EV freshman Shae Lanphere homered in the loss.
Elsewhere, Ian Harty had four RBIs and Eric Biesen (1-1) struck out nine as West Valley (2-8, 1-3) defeated Clarkston 10-9 for a split at WV.
Clarkston (6-6, 1-3) won the opener 11-4 as Travis Howell and Justin Romesburg had two-run singles during the Bantams’ seven-run first. WV’s Ryan Box, 4 for 6 for the day, had two RBIs in the second game.
Chris Eggleston hit a three-run homer and pitched a four-hitter as Chewelah (6-2, 2-0) defeated visiting Pullman 3-2 in the first game of a sweep in the Great Northern League.
The Cougars won the second game 4-3 despite the 10-strikeout effort of Steve Chamberlain of Pullman (2-6, 0-2). Chewelah’s Jeremy Miller was 6 for 7 on the day.
Elsewhere, Josh Earley hit a grand slam in the first game, homered in the second and finished with 12 RBIs as Medical Lake (6-2, 2-0) swept visiting Riverside 36-19, 11-0 in a day that featured 56 hits.
Jefferson French (2-0) pitched a three-hitter, striking out eight, in the second game. ML’s Richard Brown was 8 for 9 for the day, with 10 RBIs, and Alexis Alexander also had a grand slam in the opener. The Rams are 3-5, 0-2.
Joe Spears went 4 for 4 with four RBIs in the opener, and pitched a three-hitter to win the second game as Colville (8-0, 2-0) swept visiting Newport 11-1, 14-3.
Spears hit a solo homer in the opener to support brother Jason, who struck out 13 and pitched a two-hitter to improve to 4-0. Jared Bateman added a bases-loaded double in the opener, Brandon Wear did the same in the second game. Jo Jo Powers and Ian Skelly combined for a 5-for-5, five-RBI effort in the second game. Newport is 0-7, 0-2.
Boys soccer
George Souza unleashed three goals in a span of 20 minutes as visiting Pullman (5-0) broke from a 1-all tie to defeat Chewelah 4-1 and remain tied for first place with Riverside in the GNL.
Souza’s first goal, at 50 minutes, came on a penalty kick for obstruction in the penalty box by John Pizante. Luke Knauss scored for the Cougars (0-5-1).
Elsewhere, Jake Moug scored off Sam Fleetwood’s corner kick late in the first half as visiting Riverside (5-0) notched a 1-0 win over Medical Lake (2-4).
Fleetwood’s corner kick bounced off a couple of players before Moug corralled the ball and punched a 6-yarder past Mike Chappell. The Rams’ Jeremy Nelson notched the shutout.
At Colville, Wyatt Goldsmith’s left-footed, curved shot from 15 yards late in the match allowed the Indians (3-2-1) to edge Deer Park 1-0. Colville’s Chad Salter notched the shutout, including a second-half rebound that he originally dropped. DP is 1-5.
Softball
Melissa Wollan (2-0) pitched a no-hitter in the second game and Tarrah Brown (5-0) tossed a one-hitter in the opener as Colville (7-0) swept visiting Medical Lake 11-1, 10-0 in the GNL.
Mandy Lawson, Carissa True and Amber Puett had two RBIs apiece to back Brown’s eight-strikeout performance. Tiffany Tripp hit a threerun homer in the second inning of the second game, and True also homered. The Cardinals are 3-5.
Elsewhere, Leslie White struck out 19 and walked none as Freeman (8-0) swept visiting Colfax 5-2, 9-4.
Nicki Roeks and Michelle Kiddoo had four hits apiece for the Scotties, including doubles in the second game, when White fanned 13. Colfax is 0-8.
Pullman’s doubleheader at Newport was rained out. No makeup date was announced.
