Vaughan, Eagles Top Golf Field

Eastern Washington’s Darin Vaughan fired a 1-under-par 71 in Goodyear, Ariz., Tuesday to capture medalist honors in the Grand Canyon University Thunderbirds Invitational golf tournament and lead the Eagles to the team title.

Vaughan finished his three rounds at Palm Valley GC with a 2-under total of 214, to win by a stroke.

Vaughan’s teammates Scott Carroll (219) and Kyle Kelly (222) tied for sixth and 13th, respectively, helping the Eagles to a team total of 885 - just 21 strokes over par. Weber State finished second at 888.

Idaho’s Elizabeth Carter shot a second-round 75 to claim medalist honors and lead the Vandals to the team title in Eastern Washington’s Eagle Classic women’s golf tournament at MeadowWood Golf Course.

Carter’s 36-hole total of 149 was five strokes over par.

UI finished at 611 and easily outdistanced runner-up EWU (628), which was led by Beth Carter, who finished in a tie for fourth at 153.

Baseball

Visiting Community Colleges of Spokane built a seven-run lead on home runs by Jessie Doenze and Adam Munson-Young and then withstood a late power surge by Wenatchee’s Ross Mitchell to win the second game of their NWAACC doubleheader 10-8 in 11 innings.

The Sasquatch won the first game 15-5 as Steve Jackson and Trek Davis each batted in three runs.

CCS was up 7-0 in the nightcap when Mitchell unloaded a three-run home run in the seventh inning and a grand slam in the eighth to tie the game at 8. The Sasquatch survived, however, by scoring two in the 11th.

Basketball

Carlos Daniel, shortly after being named the most valuable player of Washington State’s 1998 men’s basketball team, said he was confident he will be playing professional basketball next season.

“I know I’m going to be making money. It’s just a matter of where,” Daniel said.

The 6-foot-7 senior forward led the Pacific-10 Conference with 10.1 rebounds per game last season, and led WSU with 16.1 points per game. He also received the Jud Heathcote Award for inspiration. Steve Slotemaker was named most improved, while Kab Kazadi won the defense award and Kojo Mensah-Bonsu the rookie of the year award.

Juniors Will Hutchens and Leif Nelson shared the Terry Kelly Student-Athlete Award.
