Churches Plan Services For Orthodox Easter

Easter won’t arrive until Sunday for churches following the Orthodox calendar. The Orthodox Easter, or Pascha, falls one week after the Western Easter this year.

The difference goes back to the year 325 when the Council of Nicaea set Easter day on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Shortly after, Eastern bishops added the requirement that Easter must be held after the Jewish Passover.

The Paschal Vigil will begin at 11 p.m. on Saturday and a Resurrection service will be at 11:30 p.m.

The church will host it’s annual Easter dinner following the Resurrection service. Church members will break their Lenten fast at the traditional event.
