Obituaries

Harold Carnahan, M.D. Berkeley, Calif.

Memorial Mass for Dr. Harold D. Carnahan, 91, will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Berkeley.

Dr. Carnahan, born in Emden, Ill., and a former Spokane resident, died Saturday.

He graduated from the University of Illinois and from medical school at Northwestern University.

He served an internship at Denver General Hospital and completed a residency in pediatric medicine at the Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Carnahan began his pediatric practice in 1936 in the office of Dr. E.J. Barnett in Spokane.

He served with the Army Air Corps as a flight surgeon during World War II and attained the rank of major. He received a Bronze Star.

After his discharge, Dr. Carnahan returned to Spokane and continued his medical practice.

In 1958 he served for one year as president of the medical staff at Sacred Heart Hospital.

In 1966 he retired from medicine and accepted a position with the Food and Drug Administration in Washington, D.C., and lectured as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University.

Dr. Carnahan retired to Berkeley in 1977.

His wife, Caroline, preceded him in death.

He is survived by a son, Gary Hall of Berkeley; and a nephew, Vernon Carnahan of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Ida Hanke Spokane

Memorial service for Ida O. Hanke, 98, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hanke, who was a 72-year resident of Spokane, died Monday.

She was born in a log cabin on the family ranch near Big Timber, Mont. She was active with the Big Timber Lutheran Church in her youth.

Mrs. Hanke graduated from Sweet Grass High School and received her teaching certificate from Normal College in Dillon, Mont.

In 1926 she married Elmer Hanke and they made their home in Spokane.

She was a former president of the Spokane chapter of Widows of World War I and later served as secretary for the state chapter. She was also a charter member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and a member of the Day Out for the Blind.

Her husband died in 1948.

Survivors include two sons, George Hanke of Spokane and Thomas Hanke of Medford, Ore.; a daughter, Grace Edwards of Eagle Point, Ore.; two brothers, Clarence Rostad of Big Timber and Ora Rostad of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Alice Erickson of Northfield, Minn., and Emma Warila of Big Timber; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ronald Eygabroad Spokane

Graveside service for Ronald D. Eygabroad, 58, will be at 3 p.m. today at Pines Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Eygabroad, a 50-year resident of Spokane, died Sunday.

He was born in Mason City, Iowa, and served in the National Guard and the Army during the Korean War.

After the war, he returned to Spokane and worked for 17 years as a bus driver for the Spokane Transit Authority. He also worked as a long-haul truck driver for various companies.

Mr. Eygabroad worked for 11 years as a driver for Goodwill Industries until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Norma; a son, Jeffrey; a daughter, Sherri; a stepdaughter, Pamela Brough; two stepsons, Ben and Ronald Hebert; his mother, Vera Miller; a sister, Kathy; three brothers, Lee, Ken and Marvin; and nine grandchildren.

Gerald Best Blanchard, Idaho

Graveside service for Gerald Kenneth Best, 56, will be at the Newport (Wash.) Cemetery at a later date. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Best, who was born in Wilbur, Wash., died April 9.

He grew up in Rosalia, Wash., and the surrounding Palouse area.

He served with the Air Force from 1959 to 1963.

Mr. Best worked as a manager for many restaurants. In 1981 he moved to Blanchard from St. Maries, Idaho.

Survivors include a son, Darin Best, and a daughter, Jeralynn Estrada, both of Friday Harbor; and three grandchildren.

Cal Jobes Hayden, Idaho

Memorial service for Cal L. Jobes, 62, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Post Falls Nazarene Church. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jobes, who was born in Spirit Lake, Idaho, died Monday. He grew up in Spirit Lake and graduated from high school there.

Mr. Jobes joined the Army and served with the medics during the Korean conflict before returning to Spirit Lake.

He worked for Kaiser Aluminum before going into the entertainment business playing guitar, and singing in country and western bands throughout the area.

Mr. Jobes last played in the Hauser Lake, Idaho, area with “Shorty and the Swing-A-longs,” before quitting the business in 1979.

He worked for the Kootenai County Building and Grounds Department from 1983-97.

Mr. Jobes was a member of the Post Falls Flyers.

Survivors include his wife Marian; a son, Terry Jobes of Georgia; two daughters, Calene Philbeck of Tacoma and Dolores McCallie of Arizona; a sister, Lois Hardin of Spokane; and six grandchildren.

Daryl Gleason Diamond Lake, Wash.

Memorial service for Daryl Lee Gleason, 62, will be at 2 p.m. today at the American Lutheran Church in Newport, Wash. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gleason, who was born in Egan, S.D., died Monday.

He graduated from Trent High School in 1953 and then moved with his parents to Hayden Lake, Idaho.

In 1957 he married Janice Livingston in Coeur d’Alene. They have lived in Pend Oreille County for the last 26 years.

Mr. Gleason worked in construction at Diamond International and was a supervisor, both in Newport and in Superior, Mont. He managed the Sacheen Lake Resort for two years and worked for Pend Oreille County for six years.

For the past 13 years he was a real estate agent at North Country Realty.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Twylla Rehder of Otis Orchards and Dawn Walker of Newport; two foster sons, Walt and Eugene; three foster daughters, Frankie, Julie and Jodie; two brothers, Duane Gleason of Hayden, Idaho, and Darwin Gleason of Spokane; three grandchildren, two foster grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Alta (Jackson) Patchen Coeur d’Alene

Graveside service for Alta Mae (Jackson) Patchen, 87, will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Patchen, who was born in Ketchum, Okla., died Friday.

She attended schools in Caldwell and Notus, Idaho, and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1933.

Mrs. Patchen moved to Bonners Ferry in 1950, where she lived until moving to Port Gamble and to Poulsbo, Wash., in 1957.

She returned to Bonners Ferry in 1973 and was a homemaker.

She recently moved to Pinewood Care Center in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Patchen was preceded in death by her husband, Guy.

Survivors include two sons, Guy Patchen of Bonners Ferry and Dale Patchen of Spokane; a daughter, Ida Mae Cooper of Bremerton; a sister, Pauline Schrag of Everett; seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Hannah Rudnick Spokane

Graveside service and burial for Hannah Rudnick, 98, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Pleasant Prairie Cemetery in Greenbluff. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rudnick, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Friday.

She owned a beauty shop in The Crescent Department Store for many years.

Mrs. Rudnick was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Corbin House Rockhound group and various garden clubs.

Her husband, Thomas Rudnick, died in 1959.

Survivors include a son, Floyd Rudnick of Big Flats, N.Y.; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Cecil Waldrip Walla Walla

Memorial service for Cecil F. Waldrip, 83, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Colonial-DeWitt Funeral Home in Walla Walla.

Mr. Waldrip, who was born in Pomeroy, Wash., died April 3 in Mesa, Ariz., where he was vacationing.

He was raised in Pomeroy and in 1938 married Wilma Wright in Lewiston.

In 1942 they moved to the Spokane area, where he worked for a number of years in roads construciton.

Mr. Waldrip then worked in the truck servicing industry. He established several businesses in Spokane including Waldrip and Ross Construction Co., Waldrip Truck Sales, Spokane Truck, and Tractor, and Truck Parts Inc.

In the 1960s, they moved to Flora, Ore., where they had a wheat and cattle ranch for many years.

Mr. Waldrip spent winters in Mesa and summers in Walla Walla for the past several years.

His wife died in 1986.

Survivors include a special longtime friend, Ravenna Ferrel of Walla Walla; a daughter, Jean Wilde of Portland; two sons, Jerry Waldrip of Spokane and Kenneth Waldrip of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; a sister, Vera Crumpacker of Walla Walla; and six grandchildren.

Robert Hunter Ford, Wash.

Funeral for Robert E. Hunter, 70, was Wednesday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Hunter, who was born in Seattle, died Sunday.

He was a veteran of World War II and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in chemical engineering. He was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity.

Mr. Hunter was a local businessman, a real estate developer, inventor, and most recently was founder and president of a local manufacturing corporation with worldwide sales.

He had attended Westgate Christian Church, and was a resident of Spokane from 1966 until moving to Ford a year ago.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Betty Ann; three daughters, Carolyn Flaa and Shirley Anderson, both of Ford, and Susan Fuchs of Rockford; a foster son, Kevin Stuss of Spokane; a sister, Alma Waldron of Seattle; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Westgate Christian Church Building Fund.

Fred Purdin Spokane

No service will be held for Fred J. Purdin, 54, at his request. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Purdin, who was born in Clarkston, Wash., died Monday. He was a 15-year resident of Spokane.

He worked as a commercial truck driver for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Connie; four daughters, Jean Woollett, Johnna Wuesthoff and Diana Thomas, all of Lewiston, and Jenni Hatke of Spokane; a son, George Purdin of Everett; two sisters; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Deaconess Foundation.

Earnest Johnson Spokane

Service for Earnest James “Ernie” Johnson, 72, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Fairmount Memorial Park, Sunset Mausoleum Chapel. Burial will follow. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Grygla, Minn., died Monday.

He served in the Navy during World War II and retired from Kaiser Aluminum in the early 1980s.

A member of the United Steelworkers Union, Mr. Johnson lived in Spokane for 38 years before moving to Newport, Wash., in 1984. He returned to Spokane four years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Alta; four sons, Robert, Gregg, Gary and Keith Johnson, all of Spokane; his mother, Annie Jacobson of Pomona, Calif.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Frank Collins Spokane

Private service was held for Frank D. Collins, 93. Riplinger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Collins, who was a 36-year resident of Spokane, died Sunday.

He was born in Delaware, Ohio, and in 1950 married Kathaleene Alford in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Collins retired from the Air Force in 1961 as a master sergeant.

He is survived by his wife.

Alfred ‘Bob’ Borchers Spokane

Funeral for Alfred E. “Bob” Borchers, 74, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Borchers, a 20-year resident of Spokane, died Tuesday.

He was born in Callaway, Minn.

Mr. Borchers served in the Army during World War II and had been a prisoner of war.

He lived in Seattle and Potlatch, Idaho, before moving to Spokane, where he worked as a repairman for Boyd’s Vacuum Cleaner Co. and as an installer for General Telephone.

Mr. Borchers was a member of the Lions Club in Potlatch.

Survivors include four daughters, Joan O’Connor and Jean Moore, both of Spokane, Connie Walker of Athol, Idaho, and Heidi Borchers of Seattle; three sons, Richard Borchers of Deer Park, Dale Borchers of Suquamish, Wash., and Robert Thompson of Puyallup, Wash.; three brothers; two sisters; and 13 grandchildren.

Mary Hartman Spokane

Memorial service for Mary I. Hartman, 84, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Hill Kingdom Hall. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hartman, who was born in Edgewood, Texas, died Saturday.

She was baptized 64 years ago as a Jehovah’s Witness in Dallas.

Mrs. Hartman moved to Los Angeles and worked as a welder during World War II, welding landing gear assemblies for military aircraft.

In 1946 she married Tedford Hartman.

After moving to Spokane in the early 1950s, she was a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1989.

Survivors include four sons, Rodger, Robert, Richard and Tedford Hartman, all of Spokane; a sister, Lesta McInnis of Cleburne, Texas; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Verna Koch Spokane

Graveside service and vault interment for Verna O. Koch, 75, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Ritzville, Wash. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Koch, who was born at the family home near Ritzville, died Tuesday.

She lived most of her life with her mother. After her mother died in 1974, Miss Koch lived in special care facilities in Othello, Lind, and White Salmon, Wash., before moving to Spokane 15 years ago.

Miss Koch was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary at C.J. Newland Post No. 51 in Ritzville.

Survivors include two sisters, Iva Mae Parks of Spokane and Marlene Clark of Grants Pass, Ore.

Elizabeth White Spokane

Memorial service for Elizabeth M. White, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fourth Memorial Church in Spokane. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. White, who was born in Green County, Ga., died Friday.

She had worked as a registered nurse for many years.

Mrs. White moved to Usk, Wash., in 1978 before moving to Spokane a few years ago.

Her husband, Horace, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Rutherford of Spokane; a son, William White of Wheaton, Md.; two grandchildren and two greatgrandsons.

Glenna Schaldach Spokane

Memorial service for Glenna A. Schaldach, 53, will be at noon Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schaldach, who was born in Brigham City, Utah, died Sunday.

She moved to Spokane in the late 1980s, and worked as both a certified public accountant and a private accountant.

Mrs. Schaldach was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Manito Ward.

Survivors include a son, Jason, at home; her father, Jack Aldrich of Kelso, Wash.; and a brother, Jack Aldrich of Spokane.

Jay McIntyre Spokane

Memorial service for Jay L. McIntyre, 58, will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Millwood Presbyterian Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McIntyre, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Monday.

He graduated from West Valley High School in 1958 and served with the Navy from 1958 to 1962.

Mr. McIntyre worked in sales.

Survivors include his mother, Doris McIntyre of Spokane; and a brother, Dennis McIntyre.
