Permit Awarded For Alaskan Mine

From Staff

Kensington Gold Mine, located 45 miles north of Juneau, Alaska, has received a key permit from the Environmental Protection Agency, Coeur d’Alene Mines Corp. announced Wednesday.

The mine is owned by a subsidiary, Coeur Alaska.

The National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit has also been reviewed and certified by the state of Alaska, the company said.

The Kensington Gold Mine has been under development the past 10 years. Additional permitting was required after Coeur Alaska became sole owner in 1995 and significantly changed the mine plan.

Coeur Alaska is working with independent consultants on a study designed to reduce capital and operating costs at the mine. Planned exploration is designed to increase the current 1.9 million ounce gold reserve, further improving the economics of the project, company officials said.
