Sasquatch Take Pair At Yakima

Community Colleges of Spokane had the benefit of one pitching gem and one offensive outburst Thursday in a 5-1, 21-4 NWAACC softball sweep of Yakima Valley College in Yakima.

In the opener, Candi Russell had a double in the seventh to drive in Teresa Paul and break open a 2-1 game. Wendy Stredick then doubled and drove in Russell. Holly Vanwert threw a two-hitter without a walk.

In the second game, Shannon Zahrowski had a double, a triple, and drove in five runs for the Sasquatch (9-5). Jen Wells went 2 for 2 with an RBI and Rachel Cox had two hits and an RBI.

Golf

Eastern Washington University golfers Darin Vaughan and Beth Carter have been honored as players of the week in the Big Sky Conference for their performances in tournaments completed earlier this week.

Vaughan, a 1993 graduate of Mead High School, won medalist honors as he led the Eagles to the team title at the Grand Canyon University Thunderbirds Invitational at Palm Valley (Ariz.) Golf Club. The senior averages a team-leading 74.1 strokes for 27 rounds in the 1997-98 season.

Carter, a 1995 graduate of Yakima’s West Valley High School, finished fourth while leading Eastern to a second-place finish in the Eagle Women’s Golf Classic. A sophomore, Carter’s previous best finish in a tournament this school year was 29th at the Vandal Spring Invitational on March 30-31.

Track

Eastern Washington senior Bob Omlin is ninth after the first day of competition in the decathlon at the Bob Gibb Classic in Boise.

Jason Williams of Ricks is first with 3,862 points.

The decathlon continues today, with the regular portion of the meet beginning this evening and concluding Saturday.

Basketball

Gordon Scott a 6-5 guard/forward from Pasadena, Calif., is the first recruit signed by the Idaho men’s basketball program during the late signing period.

Scott, who played for Barton County Community College last season, averaged 22 points per game while shooting 48 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3-point range.

Jennifer Britton has accepted the top assistant position at the University of Pittsburgh, leaving her job as UI assistant women’s basketball coach after one season.

Football

The University of Idaho football team will be in Lewiston Saturday for its first full scrimmage of the spring.

The 11:30 a.m. game is a fund-raiser for the Shriners. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. There will be a barbecue during and after the game for $4.

Baseball

Leadoff hitter Jeremy Isherwood hit two of North Idaho College’s five home runs, but the Cardinals came up on the short end of a 13-9 Region 18 baseball game at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho.
