Let’S Bragg About Jazz

If you had to pick six favorite jazz albums, what records would make your list?

(Please skip to the next item if your response is “What’s a jazz album?”)

A friend passed along a copy of the BMG Jazz Club newsletter. It includes a favorites list offered by Craig Bragg of Spokane.

His choices are “Relaxin’ with Miles” by the Miles Davis Quintet (1956), “Saxophone Colossus” by Sonny Rollins (1956), “Out to Lunch” by Eric Dolphy (1964), “Mingus at Antibes” by Charles Mingus (1960), “The Koln Concert” by Keith Jarrett (1975), and “The Real McCoy” by McCoy Tyner (1967).

Here’s what the newsletter’s editor had to say. “As far as Craig’s musical ear is concerned, fusion might as well have never happened! Take a look at his picks and you’ll see that he likes his jazz left of center. Maybe the ‘60s didn’t end; maybe they just moved to Spokane.”

* When the name fits: We heard about a math teacher named Mel Addington, a stained glass artist named David Glass, a pruner/landscaper named Dan Treecraft and a sales manager named Frank Sell.

* Lost in Debbieland: Spokane’s Tom Schultz has been married to his wife, Debbie, for 27 years.

Their son, Cameron, has been dating a Debbie for three years.

Tom’s secretary’s name is Debbie.

And on and on it goes.

* Question posed by a cartoon in The New Yorker: “If this is the Information Age, how come nobody knows anything?”

* Try to win $50,000: If you think you can giggle just like the Pillsbury Doughboy, call 1-888-WE-GIGGLE.

Or if you want to confuse the folks running the “Giggle-Off,” you could call up and, when it’s time to record your message, yell “YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH.”

* Just wondering: Are all cover teasers on women’s magazines some version of “Get Him to Commit by Firming Up Your Butt”?

* The Caitlin variations: A reader noted that we overlooked “Kaetlyn.”

Next up … the many ways to spell “Dakota.”

* Of course, the truth is: Some things that don’t kill you leave you wounded, reeling and in all ways weaker.

* Gardening defended: “Without gardening, I would need therapy.” Bernadette Haddleton, Post Falls

* Today’s Slice question: What particular brand of envy is most common in the Inland Northwest?
