Afternoon Thunderstorm Scrambles Track Schedule
They ran some track and did some field Thursday afternoon, but not very much.
The big winners were University and Central Valley, which had the bye in the Greater Spokane League schedule.
Coming in a close second was everyone who postponed their meets before getting caught in a major thunderstorm and the downpour that followed.
Third has to go to those who started but stopped before anyone was hurt.
Three meets were completed, Mead at Mt. Spokane, Rogers at Shadle Park and Cheney at Clarkston.
That leaves a handful of meets scattered across the calendar.
Gonzaga Prep heads to Ferris this afternoon, Lewis and Clark will be at North Central on Monday and, on Tuesday, East Valley will return to West Valley to pick up that meet where they left off.
The meets that were completed were often incomplete, with events scrapped or times not recorded because of miserable conditions.
Mt. Spokane didn’t fare very well against its powerful cross-district rival. The Mead boys won 131-14 and the girls had a 99-42 edge.
Panthers speedster Joe Zelinski won the 100 meters in a respectable 10.8 seconds and captured the 200. Teammate Chris Callahan threw the javelin 182 feet, 10 inches, Ossim Hatem put the shot 51-5 and Mark Stenerson triple jumped 42-1.
Tom Becker was Mt. Spokane’s only winner, taking the 1,600.
Allie Bailey and Michelle Gemmill doubled on the girls side. Bailey won the 100 hurdles and triple jump for Mead, Gemmill the 200 and 300 hurdles for Mt. Spokane.
Shadle Park swept Rogers, 108-33 for the boys and 93-48 for the girls.
Nick Kimmet won the 100 and 200 and Adam Peters won both hurdles for SP. Julie Sawatzky was the only double winner for the Shadle girls, taking the 800 and the high jump.
The Frontier started with a split, the Cheney boys winning 102-34 and the Clarkston girls winning 75-65.
Hurdler Mike Caskey and Logan Royce in the javelin and discus were double winners for the Blackhawks. For the Bantams, Brandon Ellis won the 100 and long jump and Justin Baerlocher took the 200 and 400.
Katie Moat won the 100 hurdles and high jump and Heather Tucker took the other two jumps for the Clarkston girls. Cheney’s Mariana Sheldon won the two distance races.
Lakeside opened the Great Northern League season by sweeping triple duals.
On the boys side, the Hawks beat Medical Lake 103-42 and Newport 105-40. Newport got past Medical Lake 96-57.
The girls were closer, Lakeside edging Newport 78-63 and Medical Lake 68-43. Newport topped Medical Lake 87-57.
