In 1934: German President Paul von Hindenburg died and Adolf Hitler assumed the title of “Fuhrer.”

In 1938: the Brooklyn Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals played a game using a yellow baseball as part of an experiment. Players said the yellow ball was no more visible than a white one.

In 1939: Albert Einstein, believing the Nazis were working on an atomic weapon, signed a letter to President Roosevelt urging the United States to begin developing an atomic bomb.

In 1943: a Navy patrol torpedo boat commanded by Lt. John F. Kennedy sank after being cut in half by a Japanese destroyer off the Solomon Islands.
