‘I Hate Hamlet’ Opens Friday

The Lake City Playhouse opens Paul Rudnick’s comic romp “I Hate Hamlet” Friday in Coeur d’Alene.

This 1991 comedy is about a young Hollywood soap opera star who decides to get serious about his craft and do Shakespeare in the park. The only problem is, he doesn’t have the slightest idea how.

Enter the ghost of John Barrymore, who teaches the young actor to swash and buckle with the best of them. He also teaches him how to “speak the speech” like a real Shakespearean.

Rudnick’s script is loaded with great one-liners, and the story makes some well-thought-out points.

The Lake City Playhouse production features Robert Carl as the young actor and Cary Allison as Barrymore. The director is Sandra S. Seaton.

The show opens Friday at 8 p.m. with a special premiere gathering one hour before curtain. The show continues on Saturday, Sunday and Aug. 14-16 and 20-22. All shows are at 8 p.m. except the Sunday shows which are 2 p.m. matinees.
