Bomb Squad Checks Cylinders Discovered At Fire

Sheriff’s deputies are trying to determine if two metal cylinders discovered by firefighters fighting a brush fire near Rathdrum were explosives.

One of the cylinders was described as red, about a foot long and three-quarters of an inch in diameter. It appeared to have a fuse, according to a Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department report.

The other was about 4 inches long and was not capped but appeared to be smoking.

The Spokane bomb squad was called to the Diagonal Road scene Wednesday night and destroyed both items in a nearby gravel pit. Deputies are awaiting the bomb squad’s report to determine if they are explosives.
